I asked Google Gemini again about the record holders in finals, and he answered me. So, unless it's an AI hallucination or if i counted correctly, Baresi against Steaua had record-breaking numbers in both categories. Of course, there might be other players in finals in the 60s or 70s, and even if it is an AI hallucination or if I miscounted by one or two, they are still extremely high numbers in both categories.
Marcel Desailly's performance in the 1994 Champions League final win over Barcelona : r/ACMilan Perhaps this is a good candidate for a potential record-breaker in terms of interceptions made in the finals of the UEFA Champions League.

But we could call it a technical draw AI analysy
I was not sure what to make of situations where he cuts off a pass, but the possession was not regained for the team, despite the ball being deflected towards his teammate. I was unable to find a satisfying definition explicitly stating that the possession regain afterwards was a necessary component, but I did manage to find another tally that agrees with your count for interceptions (with what may be differing opinions, or mistallies for other metrics). Yes, the numbers are similar to my dataset, but I think I was a bit stricter. For example, in aerial duels, Desailly made four headers, but twice he jumped without opposition. I used the definition that an aerial duel only exists when there is actual contest. Dribbles too, only when the player keeps possession of the ball and gets past the opponent, not just when they beat them in a run. So there is no dribble in Desailly’s goal (4:00); he just pushes the ball forward, doesn’t face a tackle, and wins through speed. But there’s no right or wrong, it all depends on the criteria. I tried to be stricter in the videos I posted here.
As long as all players undergo the same process, it is a fair comparison. Although I think your method may differ from others. I had no idea how WhoScored in particular tracks interceptions, so I used this match as a reference point. https://www.whoscored.com/matches/1...-league-2019-2020-liverpool-manchester-united Aaron Wan-Bissaka was credited with 3 interceptions in the first-half (21 minutes, 23 minutes, 32 minutes). I checked Footballia for the match to cross-reference the pitch placement and timestamp used by WhoScored. The first interception resulted in a corner-kick for Liverpool, while the other two interceptions were followed by immediate Liverpool repossession of the ball. So as long as the pass is interrupted from reaching its intended destination, and the course of play is changed, regardless of what happens afterwards in terms of who gains possession, maybe it can be counted as an interception. Of course, WhoScored may have changed their definition throughout the years like they sometimes do for other on-field actions, but from if this match is the standard to which I can draw conclusions from, I personally think the subsequent fate of the ball after a successful interception of a pass, may not play a part in defining it as an interception.
Yes, you are right, it is not necessary to recover the ball to be considered an interception. Baresi would remain more or less the same, Desailly would gain 5 interceptions (1:11, 1:50, 2:15, 2:24, 2:58). At 0:01 and 0:10 I marked them as tackles, not interceptions, but that’s interpretative. Desailly would have around 13 interceptions in this match, truly an impressive performance. Not all of them resulted in ball possession recovery, but that’s not the concept.

Bochini and Da Guia have followers in their country of origin, but they did not get to play in a World Cup at their peak as starters. Bochini resembles Iniesta a bit in his ball control (3:15) and quick play with short passes, while also contributing defensively. But at that time, players made more inaccurate passes than they do today. Da Guia, with his physical presence, elegance and first touch (1:13), had something of Zidane. But Zidane was more mobile and skillful, with spins and feints. Still, one can understand the comparison made by the old sports writers. Stanley Matthews dribbling past Nilton Santos 7 out of 10 times also became part of football history, and it’s something that happens occasionally. Jeremy Doku once dribbled Trent Arnold ten times in the same match https://theanalyst.com/articles/premier-league-best-worst-one-v-one-defenders. It still happens, but the context of that era, England vs Brazil, even if just a friendly, and the reputation of both players, is what placed that duel on another level.
