Article on the “new Pelé” in São Paulo paper Ok, Adumania is officially outta control. There’s now an article on Freddy Adu in the daily São Paulo newspaper, O Estado de S.Paulo (the “Estadão”) - the most important paper in one of the largest cities in the world and probably the most important paper in Brazil. This is not a joke. Link to the full Portuguese article below. There's nothing new for us BS denizens. Looks like just a Portuguese culling of previously published stories in the US. So I'm not going to translate the whole thing unless there's some demand - but really, it's all just stuff we've seen before. It’s still interesting to see that he’s even mentioned in Brazil at this point. I especially like seeing Ray Hudson translated into Portuguese. He and Arena are quoted extensively. The opening paragraph compares him to Pelé. That alone will get everyone's attention in São Paulo. http://www.estadao.com.br/esportes/noticias/2003/fev/11/295.htm
My favorite part is: "The report from the magazine (Newsweek) says that when he left Ghana, his friends told him that in America they don't play football. At least not very good. 'They said that it would be very boring here.' To the contrary. Adu has marvelled with the young, talented players that surround him. 'They are so good that I don't have to keep trying to win the game alone.'
Adu article in NYTimes, by Jamie Trecker Leave it to trecker to land an article in the NY Times about adu. Then all he does is put nothing new or interesting in the piece. I could've writen it. The one interesting nugget was seeing Arena quoted so directly on Adu, that's the first time I'd seen it. Quote: "Adu is a special player; he is the real thing," Bruce Arena, coach of the senior national team, said. http://www.nytimes.com/2003/02/12/sports/soccer/12SOCC.html its easy to register if you haven't already.
Re: Adu article in NYTimes, by Jamie Trecker Wow, given Arena's penchant for understated praise, that's downright orgasmic.
what if we all give 5 bucks in a giant pot at our next usmnt home game and try to buy the kid a hummer
*rushes off to take a PhotoShop class so he can manufacture a Collina-and-Adu shot before somebody else does*
I just emailed the new york times article to another graduate student in my lab, who happens to be a Ghanian. He sent me this reply: "I will be sending this to the Ghanaian President. I believe it is not too late. We can still claim him."
Time for Adidas to star producing "King Adu", shoes and T-shirts Adu- make sure you stay away from the retro jerseys.
Re: Adu article in NYTimes, by Jamie Trecker Dude, chill out. At least it talks about his likely debut for the U-17's. And the quote from area will fuel us through the winter.
No problem. We'll just send them Freddy's younger brother, named Fredua or also Freddy or something like that. The names are confusing enough on these boards, so maybe it'll also take the Ghanians a while to catch on and while they're distracted Bruce can cap-tie the older Freddy.
