Di Maria ready to come in...only the 2nd sub, but likely no freddy today.

Announcers mention Adu's name with the others on the bench.

FT 4-1. No Freddy. David Luiz was the last sub for Rui.

Benfica advance to the quarterfinals of the portuguese cup.

Big game Thursday in the UEFA cup against Nurnburg...will we see any Freddy time?

by the way...EVERYONE should rep fuma242 as I used his updates for the pbp as well as some of my own listening to the game for the updates. He helped translate the portuguese I couldn't make out in his own blog.

can somebody explain why supersub freddy isn't getting minutes any more? it seemed he was progressing toward getting more minutes and a starting role. then suddenly, nada, nothing.

    what happened?

There were a couple games that Benfica struggled, and Camacho could have put in Freddy, or if he did, put him in sooner. He has had some odd substitution patterns lately.

However, today it was a good decision not to use Freddy, the flow of the game just did not dictate to his coming in.

Freddy is in a real tough spot with a Club that does not have a reserve team hence he is not getting playing time. He is small, not very fast and does not play much defense so he needs a team that that needs his skill set-quick feet and good finish in open space. His lack of playing time really showed in the MNT game with Mexico. Best thing for this kid would be to loan him somewhere. Szetela and his team were smart to move him on.

He is not very fast? Have you ever seen him play? And he actually had some good touches against Mexico and set up our best scoring chance in the late goings by winning a free kick. Plus, he was extremely impressive in his limited appearances with his club. Why would he need to be loaned out?

He's not very fast. He's comfortable enough on the ball that he doesn't lose as much pace with it at his feet as do most American players, but raw running speed, lots of guys faster than him.

i think he was third fastest on DCU behind Eskandarian and Gross when he was 15, in raw speed. So he's pretty fast.

I would not say that Freddy has sprinter's speed, but he is quick and can "burst" by defenders, while lugging that ball with him. If that's the definition of fast, then I would say he is fast.

If you are looking for Freddy to win a 50 yd sprint against the fastest guy on the other team, that's not going to happen. However, if he's 35 yds out, the chances that he can get around a guy and give himself a shot from 15-20 yds out...? I'd say he can do that.

If he's not going to get serious minutes this year, I think we can all understand, though somewhat disappointed. If he's not getting at least 45 minutes a game by the fall, then something has gone wrong.

Eski's wasn't that fast (maybe DCU just didn't have much speed). Josh Gros was fast. But Fred is faster that either one of them.
