Okay, so this isn't Quakes related, and it may be covered on some other board/forum (which I won't go to, anyway) but when I read it, I was blown away. This kid must really be something, there's certainly been a lot of raving about him. MLS: Adu spoils Sarachan debut with Fire Freddy Adu, only 13, scored twice to lead the U.S. under-17 National Team to a 2-1 win over MLS's Chicago Fire in Dave Sarachan's first preseason game since taking over as Fire coach.

Hey! I taped the game now it's ruined by seeing the result in the thread. Damn you! Damn you to hell!
Zack Thornton Kelley Gray Jim Curtin Jesse Marsch Justin Mapp C.J.Brown All are starters or could be in MLS. Even if we don't do well with our "gutted squad" we can look back and laugh at your teams pathetic effort against a bunch of 15 year olds.
So, does this mean the current U-17 squad may do better than the Donovan/Beasley squad did, when they took fourth place? In the MLS News and Analysis board, there is a link to a Washington Post article that notes not only is Adu a US citizen now, but he might be in MLS next year. Tony
I don't think he would join the league at 14. Maybe 15. He's going to have a huge target on his back. I wouldn't put too much stock into the game. The Fire played mostly draft picks and players on trial I believe. Adu and the U-17s have most likely have had a lot more exposure to pro teams than most of the players drafted/on trial. Adu is a freak anyway, so I wouldn't put too much stock into.
The first half had some starters, and that's when Freddy scored during the run of play. One goal does not a phenom make, but he is good. In the second half it was mostly scrubs and he scored on a PK. Not to demean the effort, but there is a difference between being a good player and a good free kick specialist. An FK/PK doesn't necessarily require a mature game. Freddy is quite good and has an excellent attitude. If he were to join MLS I'd say there's a very good chance he'd end up living at home just outside of DC and playing for DC United. Seeing as most mid-year additions are allocated via a weighted lottery, as will be both Joey DiGiamarino and McKinley Tennyson, I'd assume that even after the U-17 championships that if Freddy joined MLS (at age 14) he would be allocated in this same weighted lottery manner. Thus, DC United would have the best shot at obtaining his services. Or, he could be in next year's SuperDraft (distinct possibility) and slide down to DC United much like Memo Gonzalez did to the LA Galaxy at #8 this year. -Tron
Is there any way I could get a copy of this game? Or are they re-broadcasting it at all? I've heard tons of this guy and I'm curious to see what the hype is all about. He's only 13?!!!!
I feel bad for the Fire. It's kind of funny though. They must have though "oh this kid is on 13 leave him be." Little did they know! We should aquire him...j/k..Gosh, he probably doesn't even have chest hair yet! TRANSFORM MARI
No, but it's indicative of what RSC wants to do to him. BTW, my apologies to CUS, I had no idea that what amounts to a scrimmage would be televised.
MLS doesn't feel he is ready for the supplemental draft because, despite is unearthly talent on the pitch, he still is at that age where he's too embarassed to shower in the locker room after the game. (You know...that awkward age.)
I don't think he is ready for MLS, yet. Come on! Nobody (who's got brain) will go with hard tackle against a 13yo in a friendly game, or against a 15yo ... That's why the Fire lost.
Maybe, just maybe the point of the friendly was to evaluate players the Fire drafted and players on trial. Maybe. I highly doubt that Sarachan and the Fire players all got together to beat up on some 16 year olds.
