    Friedel in goal.

    Howard as backup.

    Adu at withdrawn striker.

    Specter at Centre-back.

    4 Americans, 3 starters, for Man U in 2007!!

(uugghhh, I somehow hate the sound of that. ;) )

Fergie's going to try and get his foot in the door with Adu first to perhaps sway him in the future. He did the same thing with van Nistelroij.

I'm hoping that the rumor is true that Freddie prefers Real or an Italian team....

It would be exciting to see Adu develop under the guidance of Man U. But I'm not holding my breath just yet. We need to see what he has at the world championship first.

I don't even think there is an argument you could make for Adu needing to stay in the U.S. right now. If he gets on with any of Europe's truly great clubs then I don't think we would be dissapointed.

The downside of course is he wouldn't see first division action for at least 5 years (one would think), wouldn't come close (one would think) to qualifying for WC 2006 (a pipe dream anyway, I know), and would be a huge loss for MLS in the PR and potential attendance department.

    There's ups and downs.

can we refer to Grant as a traitor. the proper response would've been "Adu? What Adu? Never heard of the kid and you can't have him either!"

Freddy....listen up....ask your Mom to give Ray Hudson a call....ol' Ray will clean pools from Arlington to Annapolis to work an ol' deal witch ya'.....create your own reserve team (this summer)...put you in the bigs for 2004/2005...

Hang around MLS with DC until 2006...you'll enjoy watching Fro grow up (albeit at distance), becoming the constant talk of US soccer world (almost there!), and getting on Kornheiser's TV show and George Michael's Sports Machine (practically first soccer player)...and becoming the best player in MLS by late 15, early 16 and soccer's Tiger Woods...(TV shots of proud Mom in stands)

Then, after WC, you can go abroad for the big bucks (they will be REALLY BIG), having had Mom enjoy you as long as she could, having us all enjoy you as long as we could....and I actually think you will develop well as a player here too for a few years....that is, until you are the best, which won't be too too long.....then you will need a greater challenge

Believe me, you'll be in a DIFFERENT WORLD once you go to Europe, your life will never be the same, pressure will be unreal, and a normal life out the window.....but you will be hooking up with Euro-models frequently, so membership has its privledges...

Good luck, pleasure watching you in Dallas a couple weeks back...go tell Sir Alex to go blow.....you'd rather listen to Uncle Ray tell you an old soccer story anytime..

I just want to see the kid play in person.

If he plays at Manchester (any EPL team for that matter), he would be on FSW with more regularity. However, if he becomes the player we want him to be, I think we would see whatever team he plays for on TV much more often. Maybe ESPN show La Liga (or whatever league he is playing in) and there will be a fight between the two networks to show the highest level of soccer. Call it the Tiger (or Freddy) effect.

Freddy doesn't want to wait five years to become a pro. Shoe deals etc... are not going to come in if he's going to spend the next five years playing academy football.

Not that the Euro clubs aren't trying, and I even saw an "agent" trying to communicate with him during one match in Dallas (not at the stadium) WHILE THE GAME WAS STILL GOING ON.

He'll be in MLS next season, perhaps too soon, but that's where he'll be.

    Let's hope you're right.

Certainly would add some spice to the season.

Its just assumed that he will start playing in the MLS when he is done with high school next May (and he will have just turned 15). If thats true we will have him for 2 or 3 years on this side of The Pond.

I wouldn't count on the waiting until May part.

Adu should blow off the U-17 Finland thing, and take the role of Simon Matembo in Liverpool Leopard...and then in a few years, Matrix 3.

A bit dated but still true.

    http://www.sover.net/~spectrum/culture.html

    A White Middle Class Sport

Soccer is still a white, suburban, small town or white ethnic, urban sport, with smatterings of Hispanic teams in Spanish-speaking communities. African-American communities and African-American kids around the country, especially in our urban areas, have not yet adopted soccer in a manner similar to their suburban neighbors. There is no expectation of payoff, as there is with basketball or football, so African-American kids are not hungry for soccer.

Few African-American parents know the game. Fields are scarce in inner-city neighborhoods, in contrast to basketball hoops found in every playground, driveway, and alley. And no one has attempted to concentrate resources for the development of soccer leagues, clinics, and administrators for the African-American community.
Yet the potential is there. An American Pele or Eusebio is yet to be discovered, but in working with African-American youngsters in soccer clinics and on my team, I am convinced that someday African-American kids will discover soccer, will excel, will be the "Magic Johnsons" and "Dr. Js" of soccer, and will contribute to our development as a truly competitive soccer nation.
