Hey there, I just got my first pair of Adidas soccer boots (PredatorPulse FG) in about 6 years... I've been using Nike, but this year's new Air Zoom Total 90 III's let me down so much I returned them. In any case, the PredatorPulse soccer boots come with such lengthy laces that I was wondering what most folks do with the extra length (which to me seems like a waste of lace). - I've seen people tighten their boots and wrap the excess around their ankles and then tie the knot, which seems awfully uncomfortable and not-functional to me. - I've seen people tighten their boots and wrap the excess around and under their boots and the tie the know back on top, which seems again like a waste of laces since I imagine Adidas has already taken care of the lateral support with the boots, proper. So, does anyone know what Adidas' thinking is behind offering such lengthy laces? What did they have in mind when they supplied such lengths. To me, it looks like Zidane, Beckham, et al. don't wear the lengthy laces as I cannot see in photos any excess length... or do they? Anyone with giving thoughts would be great to hear from as I'm wondering if I should just swap the supplied laces with a shorter version. Thanks, BD
WELL first off you should have posted this in the players where I'm sure one of the moderators will move this thread. Plus theres a thread totally devoted to the Predator Pulse over there so you should check it out. Anyways...I know Beckham cuts his laces..ties a knot at the end, and burns the excess thread. So I'm assuming most professionals do this.
WELL, Sorry... - I looked and looked for a pertinent apparel forum but didn't find one - I thought "Player" was for talking about looking for teams to play on since it's described as "If you like to play" - I looked at the PredatorPulse post and found nothing similar to a laces query I've got no problem with this post being moved and I look forward to it. In any case, thanks for the Beckham info... I'm just looking for insight into what Adidas boot designers were thinking (Nike has never offered lengthy laces). BD
nike has offered long laces, just not with mercurials or total 90's(at least teh newer versions.) if it bugs u so much, just cut them. u dont have to ask other people if u're jus gonna cut them anyway
Yeah either cut em if you want or just tie them round the bottom it doesn't really matter whatever keeps the boots on your feet best!
You guys got it all wrong, the long laces are to be wrapped and tied, but done so in a specific way that does help the fit of the boot. First of all, do not I repeat DO NOT WRAP THEM AROUND YOUR ANKLE!!!! Medical records show that players are constantly being rushed to the hospital with ruptured achilles tendons because they had their laces wrapped this way, got their boot stepped on from behind, and rather than the shoe simply slipping off like its supposed to, the laces get caught and ....ARRRRRGGGGGHHHHHHHHH! You have a busted achilles. This is not an urban myth, it is fact supported by my own eyes and confirmed by my friend John who is an orthopedic surgeon speciailizing in sports injuries. Okay, now that that is over with, lets get down to what you SHOULD DO. If the laces are long enough, cross them over and wrap under the shoe, through the heal cleats, then back up to the top to tie off. First thing you'll probably notice is that the laces are usually just the perfect length left over to tie and have a very small bow that tucks away nicely. Second thing you'll notice is that the angle of the laces as the go back and down to the heal cleats actually does serve a purpose, pulling - ever so slightly - the heal closer to the laces. This snuggs the heal cup up, giving a better fit especially to those with narrow heals, but overall improving the fit of the open end of the shoe, something the manufacturers can not do with out making the shoe difficult to get into and out of, (Try on the F50 if you don't know what I mean). So that's it, the secret is out. My member ship in the club is going to be revoked now, I hope you can all live with your selves. Oh, and if you want some more advice on shoes, or just want to shop around check out my store's website www.soccerhouse.com
I'll guarantee Beckham doesn't do this. He has 6 pairs of boots for everygame, and for Euro2004 had a guy fly out especially to provide them (as they all individually stitched with date/opposition etc., several were made for any possible draw in the latter stages, so mebe you'll find an England Vs France final pair on ebay one day!). Anyways, whilst I don't doubt that he doesn't do the heel-tie method as described by goyoureddevils (Becks always has a relatively loos boot), if he wants laces shortened, adidas will provide these ahead of time. I'd be surprised if he even ties them himself, so the idea of him sat there with scissors and a lighter (borrowed off Lampard perhaps ) before a game seems very unlikely. I mean, that show I shortened mine, but I ain't no Becks....
Im still dubious. Bearing in mind that his Accelerator Preds had especially-made extended tongues, it seems strange that Adidas wouldn't accomodate him here. Not doubting u, just find it hard to accept That he'd get gritty and mod. his own boots, is all.
Never again shall u be doubted! Upload them? They ain't ur boots r they? Or u just posting a piccy u got from sumwhere? Wonder how much they go for on ebay!
just for reference sake, i have started saving pictures of heaps of boots etc... i have like vieras, gerrards.. but all from other peoples pictures..
have u got the all black gerrard pulses? they were wuality and wot happened to Vieira being the poster boy for supernova? he sure got the pulses quicklike!
joe cole does.. and i dont have gerrards all black pictures but i got his first pair of real pulse pics
Adidas must have signed up Sol Campbell because at first he was wearing blacked out Supernovas then went to the silver/black colours, then during a match at Euro 2004 he wore Pulses
You think if I got long enough laces, I could wrap it between my heel cleats for my AZT 90 III so that the laces push up the shoe and make it tight around my heel for less friction which means no blisters? Gonna go try that out now. Thanks to goyoureddevils. I'll reply with results.
If I were high on the Adidas corporate ladder, I'd make REALLY long laces just for fun. I wrap them around the boot, through the heel cleats. I like the way it makes them look and feel, and now apparently, my opinion has been backed up. I love it when that happens. Austen
