I recently came across the fact that many of our MLS teams have established charitable 501c3 registered non-profit foundations in order to reach out to their local communities to try and spreak the positive message that our game provides. I recently donated to most of the groups listed...so if you happen to need an email address or a telephone number, I might be able to provide... sorry, it does not look like the Rapids actually established their own individual charity...it looks like the owner has several of his teams under one umbrella foundation...though I'm willing to review other evidence if you can provide it. http://www.pepsicenter.com/PDF/Charities_Report.pdf
Hmm, it used to be a separate organization but yes, it does appear KSE has pulled all of their team charities under one umbrella now. You can see the writeup of the original Rapids organization here: http://www.sportsphilanthropy.com/content/index.php?pid=293
thanks...I found that site as well...I tried to see if any of the USL or NASL minor-league teams have established charitable foundations, but I don't think so.

Hey Don, thanks so much for the post! I actually looked at you guys well over a year so I think that I might have an old address for them. I appreciate you sharing the new address. Now that I looked again at all of my paperwork in my pile...you were actually listed as their contact!!! Too funny! So is your background in NFPs and who is Robinson and Wood? Marc Nanuet, NY
their email address just bounced back to me as undeliverable (never ever a good sign)...so I'm awaiting a return phone call from them in order to confirm their 501C3 non-profit status... http://www.cdchivasusa.com/community/foundation

San Jose Earthquakes Community Fund - the 501(c)3 non-profit of the San Jose Earthquakes that was founded in 2008. Now in it's fifth season, the San Jose Earthquakes Community Fund was created to facilitate and support programs that produce positive change for children and families in our community and with an emphasis in health and fitness. We strive to cultivate the game of soccer within the diverse communities of Northern California and promote unity through sport. Our major community outreach programs include Kicks For Kids, Get Earthquakes Fit presented by Kaiser Permanente, the Xfinity Soccer Clinic Series and our BAASST Scholarship Program. Kicks For Kids: The Kicks For Kids program works with local non-profits and schools in underserved and low socioeconomic areas to bring children out to Earthquakes games who would otherwise never get the opportunity to see a professional soccer game. We currently work with organizations such as Child Advocates of Silicon Valley, United Way, EMQ Families First, Second Harvest Food Bank, Boys And Girls Club of Silicon Valley, Big Brother and Big Sister of the Bay Area, Catholic Charities, City year, Hope Services, AnewAmerica, Abilities United, Breakthrough Collaborative and many more to donate tickets for Earthquakes games. Get Earthquakes Fit presented by Kaiser Permanente: Get Earthquakes Fit presented by Kaiser Permanente is a five-week elementary school program dedicated to helping youth live active, healthy lifestyles. The program, focusing on students in third and fourth grade, instructs and supports teachers to use ten fun activities with the goal of encouraging students to make physical activity a regular part of their day. These activities are non-competitive and low tech, allowing for a low-stress environment that delivers a rewarding experience for kids. Xfinity Clinic Soccer Series: In 2011, the San Jose Earthquakes completed their second season of the Xfinity Soccer Clinic Series and brought the program to five (5) Bay Area communities including; San Jose, Fremont, Redwood City, Union City and Salinas. In 2012, the Earthquakes are planning clinics in San Jose (2), San Francisco, Concord and Oakland. Each Xfinity Soccer Clinic was free and provided local youth the opportunity to interact with Earthquakes players in a fun, interactive environment. Additionally, each participant received a soccer ball and match ticket to aQuakes home game. BAAST Scholarship: The Bay Area All-Star Scholarship Team (B.A.A.S.S.T.) was formed in 1996 as a partnership among the Golden State Warriors, San Jose Sharks, Oakland A's, Oakland Raiders, San Francisco 49ers and the San Francisco Giants. This year, the franchises have welcomed the Earthquakes as a partner in the program. Through this program, now seven deserving high school seniors will be awarded a $3,000 college scholarship and are recognized at pregame ceremonies hosted by each of the Bay Area professional teams. Outside of running major community programs, we also schedule more than 250 player appearances at local non-profits, schools and hospitals every year. The Earthquakes Community Fund is overseen by Earthquakes President Dave Kaval, Vice President of Marketing and Communication Jed Mettee and Community Relations Coordinator Alison High. Earthquakes President David Kaval was hired in October, 2010 and oversees the business and technical side of the franchise. Kaval holds a B.A. and M.B.A. from Stanford University and founded the Golden Baseball League in 2003. He is a recognized expert by the Superior Court of the State of California on the subject of minor league baseball and the business of professional sports. He is a former board member of the Mid Peninsula MediaCenter in Palo Alto and current board member of the Work Force Investment Board in San Mateo County. Jed Mettee was appointed Vice President of Marketing and Communications of the Earthquakes in 2008 after serving as the Director of Media Relations for Santa Clara University’s Athletic Department from 2006-2008. Mettee oversees all marketing, communications and community affairs and holds a B.A. in Historyfrom Bowdoin College. Alison High serves as the Community Relations Coordinator and manages the day-to-day operations of the San Jose Earthquakes Community Fund. Prior to joining the organization in August, 2011, High worked for Silicon Valley Sports and Entertainment from 2006-2011 as the Internet Services and Public Relations Coordinator for the San Jose Sharks. High graduated from St. Mary’s College of California with a B.A. in Communication. Please let me know if you would like anymore information about the San Jose Earthquakes Community Fund. I would be happy to speak with you over the phone if you have any questions: (408) 556-7732. We greatly appreciate the support of our donors – without which these community programs would not be possible! I was contacted by Nadia who apparently runs their foundation and it was just a glitch in their email system, they do have official 501C3 status.
Just wanted to very quickly correct something from above...the New England Revs Foundation apparently does not have separate 501C3 non-profit status. Apparently my corporate matching gift needed to be directed to the New England Patriots Charitable Foundation instead. When I contacted them the Revs can't specifically confirm that my donation will be actually be specifically used for soccer-related purposes.
the Whitecaps Foundation is a registered Canadian charity (number 89874 9809 RR0001). There are a number of 501c3 organizations that can take US donations and direct them to Canadian charities, such as the Tides Canada Foundation Whitecaps Foundation ANDY PRICE, MANAGER 550-375 Water St Vancouver, BC V6B 5C6 CANADA 1-778-330-1367
for absolutely full disclosure...a very funny thing just happened to me...MLS just mailed me a youth large NYRB home soccer jersey. I called MLS and left them 2 voice-mails thanking them with no reply. Not sure how this all got forwarded to MLS, but it's a very nice surprise!
