Talk about the Awards here. I still can't believe Adrien Brody won. Great for him with a truly great performance against tough competition.
Someone needs to breed Nicole Kidman with Fred Durst so that their offspring can make the most incoherent TV awards speech ever.
Unlike the last umpteen years, can't really complain this year. Chicago is very entertaining, the exact opposite of the feel-good mega-epics of the past decade. Adrian Brody and Nicole Kidman were both very deserving, and they got Almodovar another Oscar even though Spain didn't want to give it to him. Can't even really complain about Best Song. And it's only midnight -- at 3 1/2 hours, the shortest Oscars in years.
Award Show Thoughts Thank GOD that The Two Towers got snubbed, except for those few things it did well; special effects and sound. The acting and the screenplay, IMHO, SUCKED, and I liked the first film... And yes, I am a hata...Peter Jackson is a liar and a whore... While the Pianist was good, no question, I am quite simply tired of the Holocaust story being told and retold in popular culture, as if other ************ed up ************ that happened to people doesn't make compelling drama; how many different Holocaust stories do we have now? Maybe I'm overreacting, but I really would like to have some other context for my disappointment in the species... I love Kidman; I'd get with her in the big nose and all... BTW, why is the opinion o a citizen who is an actor more (or less) valued than the opinion of a citizen who is a plumber, or a chemical engineer, or an occupational therapist? Our cult of personality - and the celebrities' embrace of it - is really starting to grate upon me... And finallly; if you have not seen them, both "Nowhere in Africa," which won tonight, and the Brazilian "City of God" are incredible films, along with the British film, "Dirty Pretty Things"...
And oh yeah, Spirited Away beat out all of the big-money competition for Best Animated feature. Nice call there.
I freakin hated this year's awards. Mexico went almost winless and I thought the Pianist should have beaten Chicago. Man I would never live down Mexico's stupid decision of not nominating "Y tu Mama Tambien" for best foregin film. In fact not nominating it last time either and so their probable shoe-in and best ever candidate for an oscar never even gets a chance.
To be fair, El Crimen Del Padre Amaro was well received in the US and had a decent shot at winning. And I thought Amorres Perros was a better film than Y Tu Mama Tambien. But I agree, Y Tu Mama Tambien was probably a better candidate.
Amen Bra, I own Swindlers list & in no way is that film top 25 let alone top ten AFI. There's enough revisionist guilt left for at least one more film. Of those though, Life is Beautiful is my favorite. And that was heavily criticized for making light of a dismal situation. Benini is a comedic genius. All this trumpet blowing on both sides is really getting on my last nerve. Alan Jackson's critique of my hometown Dixie Chicks is no more valid than Harry Belefonte's calling Powell a Tom. Freedom of Expression is of our most important unalienable rights, regardless of position.
Amores Perros would have won had it not had to compete with Crouching Tiger. Y Tu Mama Tambien was supposed to win this year but Mexico didn't even nominated it because it was on the running for last year's oscar candidate for Mexico. It lost to "Violetas Rosas" (or something like that). That movie was considered better but it wasn't as good since it wasn't that universal and didn't do a good job of crossing over. It had made no noise and didn't even went close to being nominated last year. I don't know why they didn't try again with "Y Tu Mama Tambien".
the speech from the bowling for columbine guy (i cant beleive i cant remember his name) was one word: BRILLIANT. But thats another thread, i suppose. Overall...not too disspointing..Chicago won...but i really wouldnt have preferred anything else over it...so good job finally.
I still need to see Y mama, Amores peros, Frida, Bowling for Columbine, Hours, & Far From Heaven b4 I forget. http://movies.yahoo.com/movies/feature/osc_02winners.html I was pissed that neither Daniel Day Lewis nor Jack got their due. I hate musicals w/ a passion a loved Chicago anyway, but damn, best picture? About Schmidt & Gangs were far better done. I think Hollywierd was just enamored by the glitz & all that jazz. I mean it even got best costume. What's harder, finding '20s flappers & zuit suits or 1860's era digs? Road to Perdition deserved the cinematograghy award for its stylized perspectives. Jude Law's the best. Great in AI. Great in Enemy at the Gate. Marshall Mathers best song? W.T.F.???? I think the time machine got jobbed for makeup big time. Never heard of Talk to Her but Big Fat Greek wedding is the highest grossing romantic comedy of all time. In a lesser year, Robin Williams would have been at least nominated for 1-Hour Photo. let me nominate Ben Afleck for the biggest tool in....you take your pick Harrison Ford's accent in k-19 widdow maker was nearly as bad as Cosner's horrific newenglander in 13days. Bassinger's bad twang was a tad more irritating than Jodie Foster's in Silence of the Lambs. Biggest waste of 7.50 has to be Sum of All Sh!t followed by Sh!t fan & Sh!t Dot Com. Most disappointing goes to Star Trek over Harry Potter, since Rick Berman is just hell bent on running that franchise into the ground. Out!!!!!!
I missed Chris Cooper's speech. Did he have anything interesting to say? I'm glad he got the award, in any case, as he's been one of my favorites for a while.
Here's what Detroit Free Press TV guy had: And Chris Cooper, accepting the Oscar as best supporting actor for "Adaptation," paused at the close of his brief, gracious remarks to add, "And in light of all the troubles in this world, I wish us all peace." http://www.freep.com/entertainment/movies/osc24_20030324.htm
Yeah, and he got to tongue Halle Berry too. Glad he won. I also wish Mexico had entered Amores Perros. One of the best movies I've seen in a long time.
I thought that movie was crap for the most part. Would someone please explain to me why it is "so great."
LMAO parump pump tip your wait staff wtf was he wearing. Looked like he just got some clothes out of his hamper, threw on a jacket & bailed.
He was probably one of the first white dudes who got into hip-hop in the very early 80s and leeched off Vanilla Ice prior to [ahem] "helping" Marshall write the 8 Mile song. I remember seeing guys like that at 1987 Beasties/Run DMC show 'Together Forever' IIRC. Never occurred to them that a better street look was a closely-cropped 'do.
Re: Re: Academy Awards [R] Mexico did enter Amores Perros. It lost to Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon in 2000.
