My take on the Scott situation.

Though I was genuinely excited when the rumors began to surface preseason that we had secured his rights, I must admit I was a bit perplexed at the time by the signing, in spite of his talent.

This year's crop of CONCACAF signings (Taylor, Peguero, Glen, Scott, De La Torre) looks to be MLS' best single offseason haul ever, and I was and still am confident Scott is arguably the best of them.

But considering that we have had four games now to evaluate our striker situation, it becomes clear to me what has happened here.

Erick was brought in specifically to push Jeffy Floyd Cunningham. This would explain firstly why Jeff's effort and workrate has caught the eye thus far, and as a result, why we have hardly seen Scott.

I think we're getting a look at Greg's tactical nous here that he is refusing to try a Cunny-Scott partnership, given Buddle's lack of form. While it may be true that you lose the balance of the so-called ideal "little-large" pairing if you start Scott in place of Buddle, you look around the league, San Jose and DC for example have not been afraid to play with a smaller strike partnership (though I saw Kinnear finally started Ching). I don't see why Greg should be afraid to try it.

Speaking of Ching, and getting back to the beginning of the post as to why we brought in Scott in the first place, I wonder why this signing, along with Testo, was made when it was clear McBride would be on his way and we would probably need a replacement for McBride, not Jeff. I think we needed and still need, a Ching-type player.
