I've been learning that Egypt has grown as regional power in the african continent at least taking the place of Morocco and in a less extent Tunisia as north-african top team. And that they also have good players in the major european leagues including Serie A. Can anyone give more insights into their NT and their chances of qualifying for Germany 2006? I was entertained by their performance in Italy 90 and the upset against an eurochamp Holland with Van Basten, Gullit and co.

Well, right now Egypt is desperately trying to qualify for CAN 2004. They are in Group 10 with 3 points, but Madagascar leads the group with 6 points. Last year, Madagascar shocked Egypt at home by winning 1:0. Next month however, the two teams will meet in Cairo which will basically decide the group. The other team in the group is Mauritius.

As far as them being the top team in North Africa, it's tough to say. I still personally think Morocco is the best North African team, and right now they are 2-0-1 in Group 7 in CAN 2004 qualifying. It was a shame that they were both in the same group in 2002 WCQ, and what's so shocking is that neither of them qualified! Senegal did, and for good reason (since they made the final 8).

As far as Egypt's chances to qualify for the 2006 WC, again, tough to say this early. They will definitely be a favorite going in, but it's tough to tell because the groups haven't been decided yet. I'm not sure if they have to partake in the preliminary round starting this October, but even if they do they should do fine. I think it will be close, and I wouldn't be surprised if they did qualify for the 2006 WC.

    WCQ 2006 draw for Egypt

    Group 3:

    Cameroon
    Egypt
    Ivory Coast
    Libya
    Sudan
    Benin

Simply the group of death in the African zone. :(

Things are even more difficult for Egypt now. The worse is that I would like that both Cameroon and Egypt could advance to the WC.

Cameroon is IMO the best team in Africa now. Ivory Coast was low seeded and could be dangerous, and there's always the risk of a Libya/Ghadafi fixing on the road.

    Good luck for Egypt.

What is it now... three consecutive WCQ draws into the Group of Death?
