You should read Ecclesiastes more often - it's a great book that puts forth a general ancient Near Eastern philosophical position regarding life in general, and not about a particular time or situation such as the Babylonian exile, for example. The running conclusion, just as it is expressed in the Gilgamesh Epic and elsewhere, is: Eccl 2:24: "A person can do nothing better than to eat and drink and find satisfaction in their own toil." Eccl 3:12-13: "I know that there is nothing better for people than to be happy and to do good while they live. That each of them may eat and drink, and find satisfaction in all their toil—this is the gift of God. Eccl 5:18: "This is what I have observed to be good: that it is appropriate for a person to eat, to drink and to find satisfaction in their toilsome labor under the sun during the few days of life God has given them—for this is their lot." Eccl 8:15: "So I commend the enjoyment of life, because there is nothing better for a person under the sun than to eat and drink and be glad." Ancient words to live by. Upon reading Ecclesiastes, you'll see how the comment about the unborn being better off than the born makes complete sense in its context. Personally, I love the nihilism of it all. It also can be applied theologically to the abortion issue as understood by conservative evangelicals (of which you are not). Specifically, disregarding Catholic doctrine, if a fetus has not been able to sin, it will not go to Hell. If the fetus is eventually born, it will inevitably sin and risk going to Hell. We are told the road to salvation is narrow, but the one to Hell is broad, suggesting that most people will go to Hell. Thus, abortion saves souls, and given conservative evangelicals argue eternal salvation is the most important thing, we can understand why the unborn who never see the light of day are better off than the ones who are unfortunate enough to be born. (I know you don't like "thinking like a conservative evangelical", but speaking their language is important if you want to understand them). "And I declared that the dead, who had already died, are happier than the living, who are still alive. But better than both is the one who has never been born, who has not seen the evil that is done under the sun." Ecclesiastes 4:2-3 Amen.

A baby born in America is American, is a fetus visiting America now American as well? What if it was conceived in America while a couple was on holiday from another country? Does that make it American?

I'd really love to see someone write a novel about capitalism and have it go viral, but the planet has become so toxically fond of capitalism that it's unlikely to happen.
Orwell was an avowed socialist who was saddened at how the Soviets were butchering millions of their own people. Not exactly "mental issues" IMO. That's the standard view of nearly all socialists.
