One thing mentioned in the travel thread is the notion that before an American goes over to London, he should know a bit more of the history of the club outside just the starting 11. So, the purpose of this thread is to help introduce great players, moments, traditions, coaches, characters and stories of West Ham United Football Club. The more obscure the better.
The club started as a company team in 1895 as Thames Ironworks than in 1900 became West Ham United FC.
Oh this is beautiful work. I'll need to get all my notes in order. Cearns family is hugely important Of course you need to know about Malcolm Allison, Bobby Moore, Geoff Hurst, and Trevor Brooking. White Horse FA CUP against Bolton I believe in 1923?
This from my Hammers calender: Notable Hammers events in the month of June: June 29, 1895 - A group of workers at the Thames Ironworks shipbuilding yard agree in their lunch break to form a football team for employees, named Thames Ironworks FC. June 8, 1940 - A solitary strike from winger Sam Small is enough to earn victory for the Hammers in the League War Cup final at Wembley, as they beat Blackburn Rovers 1-0. June 5, 1989 - After 34 years at the club as a groundstaff boy, player, coach and finally manager, John Lyall parts company with West Ham United following their relagation from the top flight. Noteable birthdays: June 2: Seb Schemmel is 28 June 7: Stephen Bywater is 22 June 8: Vlad Labant is 28
That's what my English friend said. That I looked like a "lad." Black turtleneck sweater. Narrow-wale green cords and my leather coat. Sorry to hijack this thread. Maybe this should be in the "Upton Park" thread.
well, you shoulda said that when you posted the picture!! on topic (WHU primer): "Oy" is yiddish "Oi!" is cockney
I putting in a good word for you with the higher ups at big soccer since you are fulfilling your moderating duties so faithfully.
When I get my A-League team up and running in Hartford, you'll have to dress like that and sit behind the goal.
On that Ramones song that the cellular phone commercial uses, are they saying "Oy" or "Oi", maybe they were closet Hammers
I will be your lone hooligan, striking fear into visiting fans, lurking in the alleys of Hartford after the match.
Blitzkrieg Bop? They're (believe it or not) singing "Hey Ho, Let's go!" It sounds like "aye oh" to me.
I think we will have several to many hooligans. I began cultivating the hooligan element last year, and I'm hoping we can bring the Hammers over for a friendly.
That would be awesome. I had the notion of trying to get the Hammers over to play the Silverbacks, but haven't the foggiest idea where to begin. I'm going to the Silverbacks tomorrow, btw. They are playing Charleston. My first game this season. Did I mention there is free beer before the game? That alone is worth the $10 ticket.
