oh...

and i'll make some comments about the roster later tonight...i'm just still too shocked at the lack of izzy-ness, and i just have a horrible feeling in the pit of my stomach that something must have happened (ie. injury)......

hey guys-

found out why izzy is not on the roster ()

she reinjured her shoulder again recently (supposedly she separated it again). this should be the same shoulder that she injured during the trip to europe last summer, and the one she had surgery on last fall to "fix". it's a bummer that she's not going to play b/c of this, but hopefully she'll be better soon, and be back on the field!! and for her to be "at the top of her game", as coach says, it must be a big disappointment.

and from my observations, this shoulder has been a "pain in the butt" for awhile, as i remember seeing footage of izzy back during her days in nebraska icing that shoulder in the locker room....so it's a nagging one! lol

i hear that izzy's pretty bummed about it (the injury) as well as the team...

i'm planning on sending izzy a 'get well' type thing, so if you have a message to wish her well, drop me a PM or an email (gousa9@excite.com) so that i can include it.

Canada names women's roster for Gold Cup

By NEIL DAVIDSON -- Canadian Press

TORONTO -- A core of veteran players will be joined by eight members of the young Canadian team that finished second at this summer's world under-19 championships for the Gold Cup women's soccer tournament that starts later this month in Victoria and the U.S.

"I look at this roster as an exciting mix of age and youth," Canadian World Cup coach Even Pellerud said Tuesday from Victoria. "I'm really optimistic on behalf of the team."

The eight-country Gold Cup doubles as a World Cup qualifying tournament for CONCACAF, which covers North and Central America and the Caribbean.

The Gold Cup runs from Oct. 27 to Nov. 9.

Canada is in a group with Costa Rica, Haiti and Jamaica and will play out of Victoria, where the Canadian women are currently in camp.

The other group consists of the U.S., Mexico, Panama and Trinidad and Tobago, and will play in Pasadena and Fullerton, Calif.

The top two teams in each group will advance to the semifinals in Seattle on Nov. 6. The winners there will earn a berth in next year's World Cup in China -- and meet in the Gold Cup final at the Rose Bowl on Nov. 9. The winner of the third-place game also has a chance to make it to China, via a playoff with an Asian team.

"First and foremost the goal is to go to the (World Cup) finals. That's target No. 1, to qualify for the World Cup," said Pellerud, who wouldn't mind winning the Gold Cup either.

But Pellerud will have to make do without veteran defender Isabelle Morneau, who dislocated her shoulder in training Sunday, the squad's first practice. Morneau, 26, has played for Canada 51 times.

A replacement for Morneau has yet to be decided.

Pellerud named 17 players to his squad Tuesday. He will add an 18th player in advance of Canada's opening game Oct. 30 against Haiti.

Veterans on the squad include strikers Charmaine Hooper (83 caps) and Silvana Burtini (62 caps) and midfielders Andrea Neil (68) and Amy Walsh (52 caps).

Christine Sinclair, who captained the under-19 squad that lost 1-0 in overtime to the U.S. before 47,784 in Edmonton on Sept. 1, returns to the senior side for whom she has already won 35 caps and scored 25 goals.

Sinclair was named MVP at the under-19 tournament, where she led all scorers with 10 goals.

Members of the under-19 team who also win call-ups to the senior squad are Sasha Andrews, Erin McLeod, Candace Chapman, Carmelino Moscato, Clare Rustad, Brittany Timko and Kara Lang. Those seven have seen action at this level before, sharing 44 caps between them with Rustad leading the way with 16 appearances for the World Cup team.

Lang, who turned 16 Tuesday, has eight senior caps and has shown in recent months that she is part of Pellerud's plans.

"She is definitely competing for a spot up front," Pellerud said.

He has a wealth of riches there with Hooper, Sinclair, Burtini and Lang. Burtini can also play in midfield and Pellerud can even slot Sinclair in an attacking midfield role just behind the strikers.

so official confirmation about izzy, and why there's only 17 players on the roster...

and the more i look at the roster, the more i can't seem to find a player who could play that left back/left flank spot that izzy occupies...the first player that comes to my head that would fit well in that position is isabelle harvey, as she's an awesome left sided player, but she is not with team canada this fall....so who could go there? i could see amy walsh moving from the right side to the left side...still a blank...hhmm....

that sucks she got hurt on sunday, at the first practice too! i wonder what happned! lol...that's exactly why i was so shocked to see izzy's name NOT on the roster, as the 18 player roster i had a week ago had her name on it, thus an injury must have taken place...

hey there-

katie's an awesome player, but i would have to agree with calling in melanie booth because:

a) katie has never received a sr. team call up yet, and i think she would have to be called into some sort of training camp before being named on a roster for such a tourney like the gold cup. i am sure in the next while she'll have that chance to prove herself. booth, on the other hand, has already a few full int'l caps under her belt, having travelled with the team to europe this past spring, and playing in the aussie series last month.

b) isabelle morneau is the player that is injured. she is a defender. booth is a defender. while i am in no way saying that booth can play izzy's left back/left flank spot (i don't think booth is a wing player, more centrally based), they need the defender. if katie had been called in, she would be fighting for a spot in the front line with the likes of hooper, sinclair, burtini, lang etc...

but what that in mind, i wouldn't be surprised to see katie part of the mix in the near future!

So, is Nicci Wright no longer in the picture for the women's national team? Is it safe to assume that she is now the third in the depth chart? I always thought she was a decent keeper, and I was hoping that she would get called up to the team.

Who starts on the 30th vs Haiti? I assume that LeBlanc will be the starting keeper?

Christine is playing NCAA for Nebraska. Nebraska has certain standards for marks before players can be released to play for National Teams. Look for Christine to reappear once her school is done.

from what i know, nicci is still in the "picture", but has fallen down to the third keeper in team depth. i also agree that i always thought very highly of nicci and believed she was an amazing keeper, and hopefully she'll continue to get her chances to show coach even exactly that!

i think leblanc and mcleod will have a nice "fight" for the starting job...i have a good feeling that they will alternate games during gold cup, and possibly fighting to play in hopefully the gold medal match!

and with regards to latham, BB99 answered that nicely. latham hasn't been with the team since the usa vs. canada series back in july of 2001, and hopefully she'll be back with the mix of things after school!!

Women's team wants more cash

VANCOUVER (CP) -- Members of the Canadian women's soccer team want to be paid more to play in the Gold Cup tournament which begins next week, and, as a last resort, would consider boycotting the World Cup qualifying event to back their demands.

"That would be an extreme last resort," midfielder Andrea Neil of Vancouver said Friday.

"We don't want to shoot ourselves in the foot. We want to qualify (for the World Cup), but we need to sort out some principles."

Canada's first game in the CONCACAF Gold Cup is scheduled for Wednesday in Victoria against Haiti. The top two teams in the eight-team tournament advance to the women's World Cup next year in China.

The Canadian Soccer Association has offered to pay the 18 women on the Gold Cup team $3,500 each if Canada advances to the final game. The players want $7,500.

The two sides agree an additional $2,000 would be paid to each player if Canada wins the tournament final, to be played Nov. 9 at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif.

The Gold Cup champion team earns $75,000 US while $50,000 US goes to the second-place finisher.

"We do want to play in this tournament," said team captain Charmaine Hooper, who grew up in Ottawa and plays for the Atlanta Beat of the WUSA.

"We want to play for our country, we want to qualify for the World Cup. That doesn't mean we're willing to take anything to play."

Kevan Pipe, the CSA's chief operating officer, said it would be "unprecedented" for the woman to boycott the tournament.

"There has never been a situation where that has occurred," he said from Ottawa.

"I don't believe that will occur. Nobody wants that."

The association has increased the money it spends on the women's program, including hiring head coach Even Pellerud and playing more than 40 intentional matches over the last 30 months, Pipe said.

The money being offered the players is "the best we can do right now," he said.

Pipe has offered to take the issue to the alternative dispute resolution system, a form of binding arbitration established by the federal government.

Dan Sudeyko, a Vancouver lawyer representing the players, wants a negotiated settlement.

"I don't think arbitration is the right method," said Sudeyko, a former national team player and member of the Vancouver 86ers of the A-League.

"I don't see how that would satisfy our short-term needs here. I doubt they would even get involved in this."

Hooper, Canada's all-time goal leader, said many members of the national team juggle soccer with university, jobs or family. They must miss school or work for training camps and games.

Some try to survive on the $1,200 a month they receive in Sport Canada funding.

"People say we should be privileged to represent your country and of course we are privileged," she said.

"At the end of the day that's not going to put food on the table."

Unlike the men's team, the women are not paid for exhibition games, another frustration for Hooper.

"The women's team has a greater chance of success at the international level, yet I don't think we are compensated the same," she said from Victoria, where the team is training.

"We're not asking to get the same amount that the men's team is making but just to be compensated."

Pipe said the men's team makes money, some of which is used to subsidize the women's program.

The CSA and the women's team had a dispute over payment prior to the last World Cup.

"Here we go again, the same thing," said Hooper.

"I feel if we don't do this now, in four more years it's going to be the exact same thing the younger players are going to have to deal with."

The women are also angry the CSA wants them to agree now to what money they'd receive at the World Cup.

Under the CSA proposal, each player would receive $4,000 for simply playing at the World Cup. The further the women advance in the tournament, the more they would earn. Winning gold would pay $21,500, silver $18,500 and bronze $16,500.

Sudeyko said it's premature to agree on any payment.

"We don't even know who the players will be," he said.

"How can we contract on the behalf of somebody whose not party to the contract?"

Pipe said the CSA has signed similar long-term deals with the men's World Cup team.

I wonder who will break first? The women do deserve more money, because for many of them they are taking time off from their full time jobs. Hopefully the CSA can reach deep into their pockets to give the women what they deserve. I am sure some thing will be worked out.

It's ridiculous that the women are paid so little.

Are those figures for the World Cup cumulative? In other words, if Canada wins the WWC (yeah, right!) do the players get $21,500 each in total, or do they get

$ 4,000 for showing up
$16,500 for winning bronze
$18,500 for winning silver AND
$21,500 for winning gold
$60,500 total?

Since many of the players are univeristy-based, they can't even take the bonuses without getting into trouble. The CMNT has players who lost salary for playign for their country and never got it back. The women are trying to use their sudden fame to make severe demands.

true, but there are also players on the team that are not in school, and they should not be penalized b/c of this. and i think what hooper was speaking is about is not just the players currently on the team, but for the future. you want a system in place so that when those players get out of school, they are compensated justly, and for the youngins' coming up ten...twenty years from now.

i'm not sure if those numbers are added up for the WWC, but i have a feeling it's NOT. and my biggest urk about the disparity is the whole fact that the women don't get "compensated" for exhib. matches and friendlies like the men are.

hopefully things get squared away, cause it would be a shame if something like this keeps these players who have been working so hard for the last 2 years from attaining their goals.

to change the subject a bit...

just watched soccercentral that i taped earlier today (as i was playing bball), and they started a 'road to wwc 03' feature type thingie, and showed some footage of the team playing a boys team...couldn't really see much cause there was a whole lot of fog, and it looked rainy/wet/slick, and visibility was really really low. they interviewed coach pellerud and hooper about the gold cup, and nothing too eventful was said.

also, just a heads up to those who are interested, but kara lang will be featured on CBC's POVSports show this thursday afternoon (i believe it airs from 4:30-5:00 locally) it's a kid-orientated show that looks into athletes and teams, and its a neat show, and i'm sure kara will be great in it.

sniff sniff, obviously this was done before izzy's injury, but the fact that they listed her as a "player to watch" (so to speak) makes it even more frustrating for me to get over the fact that she won't be playing!!

also, izzy flew home on tuesday, so she won't even get the opportunity to watch the games in person!

Men getting compensated? I just starting writing my response since I was laughting so hard.

The mens team often had to give up starting positions with their clubs to play for Canada. When they returned from international duty, they found their spots taken by other players and they didn't get back into the fold for months. Many of the players lost huge chunks of their salaries because of international commitments.

You might argue that Radzinski is in the EPL now. True, but he had to leave the MNT fold in order to better his chances. Craig Forrest no doubt had his carrier stunted due to his commitment. This has practically happened to anyone who has palyed on the MNT. Even Hooper's brother suffered.

She should see what the men are going through before she becomes so self-centered.

You think Charmaine Hooper does not know what her male counterparts have to go through?

You think she hasn't had her own share of problems with her professional club when she wants to be released to play for Canada - for free?

You think she's only thinking of herself when she complains about the women's team being uinderpaid? In her comments she expressly referred to the younger (student) players and what their situation would be like in 4 years' time. Hooper likely will be retired by then.

Maybe you should stop "laughing" so hard and try thinking for a change.

Canadian women's soccer team makes concession three days before first game

The Canadian women's soccer team made one concession in negotiations on Sunday in hopes of ending their dispute with the Canadian Soccer Association before their opening game of the Gold Cup tournament in just three days.

The team agreed to settle with the CSA on how much money the players would be paid for participating in the 2003 World Cup, which was a major stumbling block in negotiations.

"We had concerns because we think there will be some revenues that will come out of this World Cup," the team's lawyer Dan Sudeyko said Sunday. "Currently there isn't, but we just think with the popularity of women's soccer we didn't want to close off that possibility.

"I guess we're suspicious that the CSA is trying to close it off because they know, or they suspect the same thing.

"But we're beyond that," the Vancouver lawyer added. "We've said we'll just agree to what was agreed to in '99. We're not asking for anything more than that."

But the concession is contingent on settling another more pressing issue: how much the players will receive for playing in the Gold Cup, which is the qualifying tournament for the women's World Cup.

Canada's first game in the Gold Cup is Wednesday in Victoria against Haiti. The top two teams in the eight-team tournament advance to the women's World Cup next year in China.

"At least there seems to be some positive movement," Pipe said from Ottawa. "I'll convey that to my executive committee (Sunday night)."

There had been talk of boycotting the Gold Cup tournament, said Sudeyko, but he added that would be an absolute last resort.

"We've not threatened that, but it has been discussed," said Sudeyko, a former men's national team player and member of the Vancouver 86ers of the A-League. "It would be shooting ourselves in the foot. It doesn't resolve the issue. We haven't put it to a vote. It still could be, but we haven't."

The dispute is an obvious distraction for the team in its final preparations for the the Gold Cup, but Pipe said he's confident the team will be able to leave their frustrations on the sidelines.

"It's a distraction, but these players, they're experienced seasoned professionals -- some of them professional players -- and other ones who've been through tremendous pressure in other events," said Pipe. "We know that even though we've got this distraction taking place off the field, it's certainly not impeding with their preparations on the field.

"I was speaking with (head coach) Even Pellerud (Saturday) and he's very happy with the way training is going."

NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS-Newfoundland

The Burnaby Canadians Anducci's defending Canadian champions and current BC Champions flew to Newfoundland to defend their Championship. They won their first game handily over PEI 7-0. Unfortunately, due to an administrative error the game was awarded to PEI. BC then crushed the 2nd team in their pool, Saskatchewan, 9-1. They appealed the technical error but lost the appeal when the CSA representative failed to inform the appeals panel of the complete facts surrounding the error. Somewhat down when they knew the best they could finish was 5th Burnaby lost their next game to Manitoba 3-2. Burnaby's final game was against New Brunswick, a 6-0 win for Burnaby. They placed 7th out of the 10 teams in the tournament. For complete results go to
