To be fair, I've never enjoyed any Stanford reunion as much as I enjoy a good soccer game.

There's more scoring at a good soccer game.

Stanford, maybe. My high school reunions are somewhat notorious though.

I think hubby enjoys all his reunions cause he participates on the organizing committees for his HS, college, and GSB classes. He’s experienced a lot of joy reconnecting with people from 50+ years ago. I think it helps that he has a terrific memory. I can’t even remember who i went to school with.

I helped organize a few GSB reunions. I didn't even go to the last two -- too depressing to see all those old people.

Exactly why I don’t go. Why do I want to hang out with a bunch of old people :)

Seattle Sounders midfielder Obed Vargas joins Atlético Madrid
I am quoting parts of the article here. That is exactly the opposite of our GM and owner, and how the club handles deals, avoids loss and brings in revenue.

"Sources tell ESPN that Seattle will receive a club record transfer fee. That would put it in excess of the $4 million that Tottenham Hotspur paid for DeAndre Yedlin back in 2014. The transfer also contains incentive clauses as well as a percentage of any future transfer."

"Vargas previously expressed his desire to one day feature for Atleti after facing the LaLiga side at the 2025 Club World Cup......
......According to Seattle GM and chief soccer officer Craig Waibel, that match was the genesis of the deal. Seattle owner Adrian Hanauer approached some Atleti executives that day in June, and alerted them that Vargas was a player to watch."

"[Hanauer] said, 'Hey, make sure you keep your eye on [Vargas]. He's good enough to pique your interest. He's good enough to catch your attention, and today he'll leave no doubt.' Without irony, Obed performed consistent and very well that day, just like he has for years now. That's where it started."

"Waibel said the two sides were in periodic contact after that encounter, but that talks heated up in the last three weeks. With Vargas out of contract at the end of the year, it was imperative that Seattle get something for him now, otherwise it could have lost him for nothing."

Yep! That’s how it’s done. Sell your guys when you can get serious cash for them. Do not let players go on a free. Maximize your investment. Turning a guy into a star, and then letting him bail with no compensation for you, that’s not cool.

    Ugh!

    Go Quakesfans!!

Check this out. We lost Josef, Espinoza, and Chicho, each of whom was either under contract or in an option year and our total compensation this year is $500k from the Chicho loan. :facepalm But it’s fine! Who needs $ when you’re doing “addition by subtraction!”

In this Seattle example, the GM and even the owner did the work required and looked out for opportunity to secure and maximize the benefits of the club. In contrast, ours are incompetent, ignorant, indifferent, absent or all of the above.

Maybe "addition by subtraction" refers to a new technique Bruce is pioneering, where you play like 12 guys are out there even if you only have six on the field.

Yes! After all, with 11 guys, they tend to get in each other's way. This way they'll have more space and we'll play better. Bruce is a genius!

Didn’t Waibel play with Leitch at the Quakes?
Maybe Leitchy gave Craig some advice — don’t do what I did — and Craig took quick action :D

Yes. They both played for the 'Quakes. Craig left with the team for Houston but Leitchy had retired by then.

Craig gave us his former Quakes gear bag :).

No, actually, Leitch joined the Quakes in 2009. Waibel had gone to Houston when the club relocated. They never played together on the Quakes. Waibel retired after 2010 at Houston and Leitch after 2011 with the Quakes.

You’re right. I had forgotten that Leitch joined the “new” Quakes.

High school reunions are funny for me because people seem much friendlier than I remember them back in the day. Stanford reunions are like...listening to people moan about the existential ennui of being rich and maybe the occasional horny divorcee on the prowl.

Hmm, maybe the reason I don’t like Stanford reunions is because I’m not rich? I get my recommended dose of existential ennui as a Quakes fan, though. :)

High school feels so high stakes, high stress when you're living through it. Everyone is putting on a facade. So going back 20 or 30 years later, when people are ready to be a little more open (at 10 years they were not) can be a fun time, and validating too. So many people were dealing with so much insecurity, or plain miserable.

Stanford reunions, yeah, a lot of posturing. The most successful alums never bother to come to them, so the rest are left one-upping each other.

My 50th reunion is coming up in October. I’m looking forward to seeing people I hated for reasons I’ve forgotten…
