Bruce Arena has signed a contract with #Quakes74 to be the team’s next sporting director and manager. Chris Leitch will remain GM and report directly to Arena. More details here.https://t.co/acQFbMQd0V— Jeff Carlisle (@JeffreyCarlisle) November 7, 2024
"I already know that we want to bring in anywhere from, three to five new players, at a minimum," Arena said. "We're gonna target some guys and try to attract them to San Jose. "You can't change a dozen players in one year, so I think we need to have some patience. I think the roster's a heck of a lot better than they demonstrated this past year. It's not a 21 point roster. Is it a 30 point roster? Is it 40 points? Is it 50 points? I don't know, but the roster is certainly more capable than they showed in 2024." The Earthquakes organization and Fisher are prepared to make an additional investment in the complex at PayPal Park, the team's home venue. The upgrades include improved locker rooms, a player meeting room, a team dining room, an additional practice field and other amenities that will improve "the everyday environment for the players." Arena said the team is also committed to spending more on player salaries. In the latest release of salary data from the MLS Players Association, the Quakes ranked 26th out of 29 teams, with a payroll of $14.63 million. Arena said that Fisher hadn't put an exact number on the amount of any spending increase. "The commitment [Fisher] has made to help improve the roster is the one that I think is very positive," he said.
Little disappointed in the lack of potential turnover, but he did say 3-5 minimal where I would like more than double that.
Negotiating a good deal for yourself at the expense of the public is good business, and bad faith in humanity. But obviously, this is what the average American supports nowadays, so yes the vote could easily change with the new Supervisors.
What is the expense to the public here? The County's contribution is blighted land they are not using, have not used productively for decades and have no prospect of using, will not sell outright, and which the County Executive stated at the meeting is costing the County $2 million per year in upkeep. Fisher's proposal removes that upkeep on the portion the Quakes are using, thereby saving the County money hundreds of thousands of dollars, and perhaps as much as $2 million annually. Fisher's proposal also provides rent to the County at a rate roughly equivalent to what Bay FC contracted for with the City of San Francisco for Treasure Island (per Jared Shawlee at the meeting yesterday). And Fisher's proposal provides professionally managed soccer fields available for the public, something our local city government has been unable to supply in anywhere close to sufficiency. Supervisor Arenas kept discussing the fact the County budget is $40 million in the hole, but it's not Fisher's fault, nor Fisher's job to bridge that budget cap. If the County can squeeze increased rent from Fisher, great, but there is simply no honest basis for accusing Fisher of bad faith in this transaction. None. It's all projection.

I got quoted in the mercury news article, so maybe the Quakes will cancel our seats This link should be shareable, but the Merc reported the same stuff that I listed above https://www.mercurynews.com/2024/11...training-facility/?share=s0ctynjnlrts00cntu6g
“John Fisher’s interests are real estate,” Merijane Lee said. “He wants you to grant him access to public land rather than buy his own land for his own enterprise and benefit. Even though, as owner of the historically worst team in MLS, he is reaping unknown amounts of MLS broadcast revenue … Giving John Fisher public assets is just charity for billionaires.” Kind of an odd comment given that the Quakes did purchase the land for PPP, and developed the stadium without public assistance. We complain that ownership doesn't invest enough in the team, and now they're offering to invest more, in a public-private partnership, but we're against it now? Maybe they can arrive at terms that are more favorable to the county, but remember this is blighted land for which the county currently earns a negative $2M.
In fact, the land eventually purchased for PPP had similarly been costing the City of San José $7M(?) a year or so for several years prior. GO SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES!!! -G
Isn’t this land right across from Oak Hill Memorial Park on Curtner and Monterey Road? I wouldn’t like to play night games there!
