The MLS trophy nobody wants: How The Wooden Spoon came to be - ESPN The Wooden Spoon trophy is a fan-led effort to keep MLS teams accountable for poor seasons and express supporter dissatisfaction in a league with no relegation. Daniel Giroux
Let's hope she's not a Quakes fan! My aunt woke up from a 13 year coma !!!!!— Bruke (@BrukeFasil) October 22, 2024
Remember 2017 lol With a 5-0 win in the Western Conference Wild Card match, @WhitecapsFC matched the largest margin of victory in a postseason match in club history (5-0 vs. SJ, 10/25/2017). Scottish countrymen Ryan Gauld (3G, 1A) and Stuart Armstrong (1G, 2A) led the Vancouver charge. pic.twitter.com/SQtDZBAsqK— MLS Communications (@MLS_PR) October 24, 2024
I remember 2011, when Vancouver fans rioted in the wake of losing the Stanley Cup finals, rendering obsolete the book I had just purchased on a short history of riots there. Proud no such book has needed to be published for San José, let alone need new editions. But yeah, selective memory seems like something Cascadians would go for.
that’s not .500 where’s it’s only wins losses. Have to include ties. It’s a 29% winning record. Not awful, not stellar.
But there are ties in soccer. It doesn't make sense to require 1/2 wins in order to be ".500" when there are 3 possible results. And a tie is inheritently a ".500" result. If you take the Quakes 2023 results as a whole, they were exactly equal to their opponents. No better and no worse. You cannot say that on balance the Quakes were better or worse than their opponents. They were exactly equal.
Put another way, if winning half your games is what's required to be a ".500" team in soccer, then only 3 teams in MLS were ".500" teams in 2023. Everyone else fell short.
Imagine if Espinoza or Lopez publicly apologized to Quakes fans and called out those running the organization.... First, I want to apologize to all the fans who, on a Wednesday night, dropped everything to support us. It’s really hard to lose the way we did. The truth is, losing is not in our plans, but we have to deal with it.— Evander Ferreira (@OficialEvander) October 24, 2024 Portland fans do not deserve the people who have power over this club. People who say they are men but do not keep their word. People who are only there when the team wins. Unfortunately, these are things we have no control over.— Evander Ferreira (@OficialEvander) October 24, 2024
I seem to recall the Quakes having their way with the Timbers in the Rose City until the refs actively intervened. The Timbers did not impress me. Did the Trailblazers apologize for losing to the Warriors?
Vancouver has lost at least its last four league games to LAFC, its next playoff opponent, so we’ll see if their social media’s current arrogant vibe lasts long.
What the heck is Evander talking about here in regard to “the people who have power over this club”. What “unmanly” thing did they do, where they didn’t “keep their word”. Keep their word about what? And how did that cause them to lose 5-0 at home to Vancouver? Is he mad about contracts not being renewed? About not getting player reinforcements?
I just looked at a Portland reddit thread. They’re not really sure what he’s talking about either. All I got was that it’s because “Merritt Paulson sucks”, and maybe they didn’t reinforce the defense the way they had hoped or possibly been promised, and maybe it’s because he only shows up after the games when they win?
Paulson forgot there’s a 50 percent surcharge for postseason ref bribes. That includes the play-in game. Don’t blame the players for expecting him to get it right.
Don, you continue to allege bribery of referees with absolutely no supporting documentation except for your perception on how calls were made or not made. As an attorney, you should know what slander and libel are and what constitutes evidence, but apparently you have forgotten those things when it comes to your war on MLS referees. Until you can provide even a sliver of actual evidence that any MLS referee has been bribed or coerced you're just blowing smoke up everyone's ass...
He forgets you were one of those "paid off" officials. He also has a war against every teams fans, Miami, Apple, MLS, Don Garber, LAFC, Messi etc.
“war”. Has that term been bastardized like, “ghetto”? I have opinions. And the truth hits like missile for some, apparently.
I agree that was an egregiously badly reffed game, but doesn't prove anything wrt bribery, which is a very serious charge.
These Tweets from Evander last night are the continuation of a very real pattern of discord between Timbers players and the front office in the last 3 years. It is not just “the Timbers Army” or “a few whiny people on Twitter.” #RCTID 🧵 pic.twitter.com/iiM9yuymls— Ryan Clarke (@RyanTClarke) October 24, 2024
OK but what exactly is that “discord” about? I looked at a reddit Portland Timbers forum and they didn’t seem to know either. There was some “Paulson sucks!” kind of stuff but not much in the way of specifics. Is he cheaping out on accommodations for the players, being mean about contract renewal, shit talking them when they lose? What is it exactly?
