Yeah, I know. I assume that's the video they were talking about though, unless there was something else I missed.
I agree that it isn't just a bitch fest. The only things I can really point at that I found concerning the first time I saw it was when Parky mumbled something about Kraft, and when Sharlie said that fans were not coming back because of what they are doing to the team. It seemed pretty clear that they have some issues with the FO or the owners. Who knows though, it may just be your usual grass must be greener elsewhere attitude that everyone gets when moving onto other things.
Sports fans have dried up here before, and if Kraft's football team continues to trend towards where his soccer team is, Gillette will be half-empty before you know it. I think it's a useful thing to remember that. The soccer team is not unique in playing to near empty houses because they had zero buzz because good players were leaving town, the owner acted like an absentee landlord, and the town basically just gave up on them, except a handful of hardcore fans who continue to persist in calling WEEI. Anyone else remember scooting down at Red Sox games? It used to be a sport in and of itself to move down a few rows or a few dozen rows because no one was sitting there. Night games when I was growing up were sometimes very empty looking (I'm remembering one against the Angels in particular). We were joking in one thread or another about needing an owner like Drew Carey. It's probably true. Just getting a good owner at this point might not do the job. We need an owner who is basically a walking advertisement for the brand.
Just for accuracy sake, Shalrie doesn't say anything about the Krafts. He says that he understands that fans are not coming back because of what the 'Revolution' are doing. He might mean the FO, the coaches or maybe just that the team hadn't been doing as well lately.
I think for the most part the fans have already spoken. Attendance has been horrible. The core group of supporters will always be there because they love going to the games, making a lot of noise and rooting for the home team. Kraft wouldn't care if even less people showed up, they would probably give out free tickets to youth soccer leagues to keep attendance just high enough to not be laughed out of the league. The real question is how many 5k attendance home PLAYOFF games can you go through before you start dragging the image of MLS down? Sure it's easy to hide the numbers on a crappy broadcast on TV38 but when ESPN is picking the game up in HD and you show that crowed in a 60k plus stadium it has to be a little embarrassing. Actually what would make a statement is if everyone stopped going to Revs games and started going to Boston Breakers games. At least let the public know that the fans are there, they just switched allegiances.
i'm sorry, but if everyone stops going to revs games and goes to braaker games no one outside of these boards would notice cause the 99% of the people in this state don't know the breakers exist, while only about 75% don't know the revs exist.
As a season ticket holder for both teams, I resent this statement. It's not an either or, not with $200 Fort and $130 Dock.
That's about the size of it. Don't ask, I don't think we've seen the end of them. But, don't forget, they're "disappointed." But also don't forget they think that the low turnouts are due to "fan apathy" after 8 straight years of playoff appearances. insert Captain Picard facepalm pic....here.
New England fan and media love winners and great, feel good sports stories. Let this team make real noise in MLS like they did back when they made the unlikely stretch run to play in MLS Cup in the Razor and they will get press and a fill seats.
I agree Doc..I was being a bit facetious..but Yes, exactly what you said!! I truly believe even the Football Snobs would turn and give us another look if the "atmosphere" were to change. Most easily recognize Nicol and his accomplishments as a player and respect him for that...They would also take note of him as a coach and the Revs as a team if he were to be allowed to act like a real manager. I totally believe that..
This. There is not, I don't believe, another person actively involved with MLS with anything like the professional resume of Stevie Nicol: Four First Division championshipships Three FA Cups and, oh yeah, one Champions League trophy For that matter, no coach of any other Boston team has that kind of resume. Belichick played lacrosse at Wesleyan. Doc Rivers comes closest but...no If nothing ELSE, ffs, get him a sitdown with Bob Ryan locally. Ryan doesn't get soccer at one level, but he gets and loves *sports*, and hell, it wouldn't help to remind Simmons about his rules for being a sports supporter.
I'm pretty sure no one puts "if this happened, I'd have failed" as part of their work history. Belichick has 3 Super Bowls. No ifs, ands, or buts.
All I'm saying is that Nicol and Belicheck have done a lot with little. Belicheck just got lucky 3 times. Nicol not so much.
Like it better than "World Series." Ah yes. Luck. Had nothing to do with the players actually making the plays they needed to, it was luck. BTW, since I can already see the comments coming ... yes, making the playoffs last year was luck to me. Here's the difference ... when you win a game, while luck can be involved (lucky bounce, etc) you still have to make the plays to beat that team. It's a lot more lucky to win a game (beating Columbus) and having 4 (or was it 3) other games ALL go in your favor (things you had no control over).
Luck definitely plays a part in all sports. How many times out of 100 does David Tyree manage to catch a ball by pinning it against his helmet (probably one). How many times has a player lying passed out on the sideline (David Patten) had a ball touch him, and thus be declared out of bounds, saving a turnover, how many refs would have interpreted Brady's play against Oakland as a fumble? These are all examples from the past decade that involved New England, I could go on for hours over the rest of sports. The truly great teams either win by enough that these types of breaks don't matter, or manage to find a way to overcome them, but the line between a champion and the Buffalo Bills can be pretty narrow.
