    quote:

In this era of renewed patriotism, these antiwar candidates can lead the Dems nowhere but to disaster. On the other hand, the only candidate who is not antiwar – Joe Lieberman – is far too moderate to excite the Democratic base or (should he somehow gain the nomination) explain to the nation why it should turn to him rather than George Bush. What the Democrats need is a candidate who is staunchly prowar who can also – and here’s the tricky part – offer big, bold initiatives at home without sounding like some kind of McGovernite economic radical. That slot has been open for a year, and John Breaux’s speech suggests that somebody may at last have worked up the nerve to try to fill it.

Oh, heck with John Breaux. He's just (thinking of) running to try and get his (somewhat interesting) comprehensive health care bill some traction.

Here is the other new Dem candidate that should get the Republicans on this board all wound up.

    Are you ready for...

Carol Mosely Braun? Way back when, I voted her in for her first term. But then she turned into a fat, sleazy crony. What is she thinking?

The Dems just need to keep trotting out Nancy Pelosi every chance they get.

You're worried about Lieberman being too moderate, and the alternative is John Breaux?

OK, I rephrase the question. The writer is worried about Lieberman being too moderate and throws Breaux into the mix instead?

If the election was being held right now, the Dem candidate's position on the war would be vital, but the election is in two years. If the war is ongoing at that point ... I hate to use the word quagmire, but this war is being sold as a 1-2 month deal. I would think Bush would have his own war problem then.

Even if the war is a resounding success, if the economy continues as it is, that's the issue. If only I could think of a historical precedent...

obviously Frum isn't the guy to nominate Dem candidates. i just hadn't heard breaux's name put up as someone that was considering a pres. run before. thought that was newsworthy.

Fair enough, but considering that a) it was mentioned by a Bushie and b) Breaux is at least as "moderate" as Lieberman, I'm not sure he's viable (especially if, as the author claims, Lieberman is too "moderate" for Democratic voters)

Every time I see her, I'm concerned that her eyeballs are going to pop right out of her head. In four years, her eyebrows are going to be at her hairline if she keeps this up.

They need Henry Waxman as minority whip or something, when they pop out, he can catch her eyeballs with his nostrils

I think we all hope and pray that any war with Iraq is long gone and not a political issue in '04.

I really wonder if anyone, short term, can pull us out of the economic troubles we are in after that false internet economy. Bush could be very vulnerable by '04.

Never happen do you think we want to national build any where any more?

No, just want to keep the oil flowing with no weapons that can be used against israel and shipped to use against the USA. We don't care about those people or the afganans.

After this war the mother of all wars which will last 30 days or less when it does start. We are out UN is in or we are out any way. That's how we are getting out. The question polosi likes to ask we just go once we know any mass destruction weapons are history.

I do wish we just take over their oil fields. Nice to buy gas at 25 cents per gallon. Do that Iraq has no money to do anything except play in the sand.

We do that, what Arab nation can stand against us. If they do, we take them over and their oil. Then they will be kissing our arse borrowing money to by camels.
