As part of what I am doing I am now going to go back and compare my list of all time greats and pantheon players to corresponding all time lists for certain countries. This will act as two things 1) a retrospective on my style of ranking which emphasizes longevity more than many tradition media voted all time rankings which emphasize peak level of performance, and 2) another chance for me to reevaluate my rankings.
Ipswich were fantastic under Bobby Robson. Great memories. Paul Mariner scores v Villa in 1981 #itfc pic.twitter.com/9wQTPLWtf1— @forgottengoals (@forgottengoals) January 17, 2020 It feels like the info that has been posted (esp. the part within the spoilers) is a bit ignored here (with also my own take and reasoning there on who I find more impressive). You can indeed argue Thijssen had the higher peak. That is fair. "Arnold Muhren 1978-82, 214 app, 29g Elegant left-sided midfield player whose arrival led to a change in style for Bobby Robson’s team during the 1978-79 season. The Dutchman provided a superb conduit between defence and attack through his close control, immaculate distribution and pinpoint crossing. If Kevin Sheedy’s left foot was educated then Muhren’s had a PhD. [...] Frans Thijssen 1978-83, 170 app, 16g The Times’s Clive White described the Dutchman in October 1981 as “the only great player performing in Britain today.” Controversial, but the Football Writers’ Association agreed to the extent that he was named its Footballer of the Year at the end of the season - only the second time a foreign player had won the award, the first being Bert Trautman in 1956. The £200,000 signing from FC Twente was bought to replace FA Cup hero Brian Talbot in 1979 and Thijssen offered the admirable work ethic of his predecessor but also breathtaking skills. He mesmerised opponents and the Portman Road faithful with his dribbling and close control. More of a provider than a goalscorer, he produced the goods when it counted with a goal in both legs of the Uefa Cup final victory over AZ 67 Alkmaar." https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/the-50-greatest-ipswich-town-players-7nqxxx6jgzw Mühren finished 5th in the FWA voting in the year Thijssen won the vote. I think though citing the number of caps can be misleading because for some while Mühren refused to play for the national team while Thijssen did to a lesser degree. Previously at Twente, Muhren had more competition in his passing/distribution role for the national team than Thijssen had (a dribbler in midfield). I also think a more spectacular dribbling style helped for the perception (rather than a passer and retainer) as well as a quieter and muted personality (something similar happened in 1997 with Ian Wright receiving nominations and not Bergkamp, of which Wright himself said it was unfair and the reclusive personality is a factor). John Wark scored many goals and that understandably helped too for perception. However, Mühren preceded him by one season and was/is seen as the key signing that allowed Bobby Robson to change Ipswich their playing style during the season. Hence him becoming Ipswich their player of the year in the first season. Later on they formed a serious title challenge (1980-1982) but were undone by having a very small squad in a 42 games league season (rather than 34 or 38 games). "As it turned out, it would be the size of the squad which would be key to determining where the First Division title would be heading, as both title sides' seasons took very different paths after a long and gruelling 10 months of high-octane football. [...] The chance of a historic treble was very much alive, but the weight of games was starting to take its toll on the Ipswich squad. Fighting on three fronts – league, FA Cup and UEFA Cup – they played a mammoth 66 competitive games that season and, inevitably, the sheer workload took its toll as first-team regulars suffered injuries; Bobby Robson’s small squad started to creak. On the other hand, Aston Villa only had the league to worry about and played a total of 46 games – 20 fewer than Ipswich – while using a grand total of 14 players. Ron Saunders was in the fortunate position to select a settled side, week-in, week-out thanks to no injuries and plenty of time to rest between games. By the time the UEFA Cup resumed, Ipswich carried on where they had left off and defeated Saint Etienne 7-2 on aggregate to progress to the semi-finals. Hoever, just days later they were beaten by Manchester United in what was their first league defeat in three months; it was a loss that triggered an alarming slump in their form which ultimately handed the initiative to Villa. As well as reaching a European semi-final, Town also progressed to the last four of the FA Cup as they beat Shrewsbury, Charlton and Nottingham Forest following the defeat of Villa. Injuries started to mount up and disrupt the flow of the side while losses became worryingly regular. Reserve team players were drafted in, but in all honesty they were not in the same league as the likes of Thijssen, Mariner, Brazil, Gates." Thijssen was in 2008 one year earlier than Muhren inducted in the Ipswich Hall of Fame, but I've also seen (local) lists where Muhren gets placed higher, although he played over 40 more games for the club of course. Overall I think Muhren had the better career and managed to find a place for himself in many different sides (not only different in name, but also actual different contexts). When the leagues differed quite a bit from each other. He's older than Neeskens as mentioned in the first link and not every player made the World Soccer cover at their retirement.. I also understand the idea he was a role player, but also feel like with that in hand we can hack down several other players. Most old fashioned man markers were just role players and rarely among the best three/four players of their team (and yes, I've also seen you excluded names as Donadoni).
Just as an aside Puck, I'm wondering whether this is just a titbit of information you found out, or whether for this and other years you know the full top 5 or 6 in the voting? You might have seen I've spotted some info about the positions (outside 1st) of some of the old England legends, and posted that in the Worldwide Ballon d'Or shortlist thread recently. Maybe I've posted some info for some other years due to having Rothman's Yearbooks as that seems to be the best source for finding out FWA shortlists and Teams of the Season that I saw myself. In general though there doesn't seem to be any sources that can be easily found, especially online, regarding the players receiving a lot of votes without winning it (for the PFA Player of the Year, I think there tends to be more in the way of reports about it etc, that can also still be found retrospectively, at least for Premier League years, and PFA Teams of the Year can definitely be found on Wikipedia of course).
It's just mentioned in a few articles in the archive for that year. I don't have it for each year. Anyway, typical stuff too that Germany at their weakest phase is seen as having more quality players than Netherlands in their best phases. The tendencies and ingrained inclinations are so, so strong here by the usual suspects. I struggle to see why Gerrard is a great and Bryan Robson is not. Anyway, on the thing in bold; you can say the same about famous cases as Gento, Giggs, Donadoni and hell, even Maldini to a degree (except for a brief moment in 1994). Although those, more so than the continental/international success, had way more league success obviously for huge clubs (Muhren finished only two times 1st, six times 2nd, three times 3rd). As you noticed yourself, someone like Giggs hardly set the individual awards like ESM on fire, but then you are convinced by that Wales fans regard him as having a few world class seasons despite the (international) recognition. https://www.bigsoccer.com/threads/great-players-without-individual-awards.1981714/ As Cox observed though in 2013: "Although Totti’s longevity can be compared to that of Ryan Giggs, the Manchester United winger has rarely been one of his club’s three key players over the last 15 years – he’s always been in the background, turning in reliable supporting displays. Totti has always been the star, and frequently Roma’s best player."
Thanks Puck for confirming this. It is what I probably expected had happened, but I thought I'd check anyway as a full set of FWA voting results (or top 5 or 6 placings in effect) would be definitely an interesting find IMO. Even random years would be interesting I think, but like I say maybe those Rothmans Yearbooks (and later Sky Sports Yearbooks - it was more those that I refer to for the ones I've seen probably actually) would help for quite a lot of years. The problem is buying a lot of them for that purpose would be expensive though!
I've just reminded myself in more detail, by looking again at these posts from the Premier League/First Division ratings thread, and it would seem to be the case that before 96/97 those Rothmans books might not help anyway (I couldn't be sure, but it seems like that I remember now):
Where I'd written Team of the Year for 2009/10, I had meant for 2008/09, I remember too (in case it confuses anyone!). I'd found the team in the book for the 2009/10 season (released ahead of the season, not a review).
A genuine question: what are you exactly referrring to? 1999 was definitely one of the weakest phases ever for Germany and one of the best phases of the Netherlands, but PDG1978 was talking about FWA trophies so I don't see the connection to how Germany was seen as having "more quality players than the Netherlands" in 1999?
It's a reference to my previous thread about the best players of 1998/9. I selected 11 German players and 8 Dutch players, albeit in a season where Bayern were CL finalists while Ajax and PSV finished 4th and 3rd in their CL groups respectively.
... and Barcelona won the league, with a few starters in the spine, in what was then maybe already the best league. In the euro 2000 squad only four of the players were playing domestically - after a lobby by the clubs to include them when in doubt. It's also Peru FC with his lists around 2000, although it's unfair to single out one person particularly. Hence I didn't name a specific person in the initial comment. He slashes down the Holland players - even compared to 1998 Ballon d'Or or ESM standing for instance - while the gates are wide open for England, Germany and underperforming Argentina. For some there is a second chance if they don't register much in international awards and votes (or even zero votes), for others a double to quadruple handicap. At the same time, with an almost five times higher population and almost six times as many registered footballers something has to go wrong to make up the gap. One has to be above average and the other below average. Furthermore, you don't need 40 good players to make a competitive team (per Elo or the '21st club' ranking).
Also, in the UEFA Cup no Bundesliga team made it past the 2nd round, while in the CWC the 1st round was the stumbling block. Duisburg beaten by Genk with 1-6. In the 2nd round of Uefa cup the teams lost against Bordeaux, Marseille (later finalist) and Club Brugge respectively. Abroad there was Illgner, Köpke and Bierhoff as notable players operating for league championship contenders. Although intentionally not naming posters in previous posts, the likes of Peru FC and Dearman are in particular major downgraders and slashers (see also the Ballon D'Or Dream Team thread for yet another proof for the slashing; with players of other nations receiving thumbs up even if never receiving a single vote and/or single nomination).
To repeat some previous comments by me that I made on PM "Also notable is how Germany at their absolute low has still more quality than 'Holland' at their high point. Admittedly, unlike previously discussed England of the early to mid 90s (the year 1994, the league coefficient, head to head etc) results still came about. Of course, the usual suspects, the pseudo professors, like that sort of stuff. It's the Stanley Rous patented Anglogerman axis. The axis that would strip away several of our Ballon d'Ors if it was up to them and promote 70s Bayern to the greater team. https://www.bigsoccer.com/threads/ballon-dor-dream-team-2020.2111826/#post-39011046 Had that happened, the 'tokenism card' could have been played on the table. [...] Well, around 1999 certainly. Germany was entering their lowest years and Netherlands had top players on all positions (mid-season acquisition De Boer played his part in winning La Liga and improving team form). But as said, somehow Germany always was able to get results, even if in patchy Italian fashion, while Netherlands spectacularly messed up for 2002 with on paper a top coach and good talent around. And yes, I know the population is five times as high while in ESM the difference is 45% (even if you do something very wrong, the population is even much higher than England and Spain). Of course, the usuals like such tendencies in perception." Luckily, comme has said he appreciates and wants a challenge. What can be noted as well, is how often players of this generation started a CL final in their career...
This project is spectacular. But I think and its normal that many great players are missing from the lists ie african or asian players. If longevity is such an important criterion then where is Kazu Miura or Roger Milla? Also, some players were unlucky to play for small national teams ie Best and this should be taken into consideration. And another thing is that the lists look very European based leaving out great players from countries like Bolivia, Colombia, Nigeria, Cameroon. There were some magician players with crazy skills and consistent top level performances in their domestic leagues like Greek Hatizpanagis, Saudi Youssuf, Salvadorian Magico Gonzalez and others with unreal records in NT like Danish Pou Nielsen (52 goals in 38 games). Last thing I would like to highlight is that the criteria are too strict leaving out of the Pantheon players who deserved to be for many reasons: skills, achievements, records, impact, icon status. From the top of my head: Ronaldo Lima, Arthur Friedreich, Josef Bican, Andrade, Imre Schlosser. And I would definitely consider as ATG players like Henrik Larsson, Carlos Valderrama, Dixie Dean, Ivan Zamorano, Roberto Palacios, Paulino Alcantara, Belloumi, Costacurta, McCoist, Marco Etcheverry, Landon Donovan, Lee Wai Tong, Al Owairan. We need to shed more light in national tournaments all over the world, not just europe, south america and world cups. There is AFC, CAF, OFC and CONCACAF. Here is a list of 25 unknown superstars: https://www.thesportster.com/soccer/top-25-greatest-soccer-players-youve-never-heard-of/
