I'll add 1) the weather was crappy and 2) the Pirates were in town and playing the Red Sox for the first time in 100 years. But the front office has to be worrying about this.
Looks like Indiana better start giving it's tickets away for free again. Yep that promotion sure worked.
Yep, looks like Krammerhead was right again so we got: Cincinnaiti, El Paso, Indiana. all who cant draw anyone.
Blast You guys are looking at a single bad game to prove a point that is not supported by the numbers. If you follow Kenn's link, you will find the Blast in the middle of the A-League pack(11th out of 19).Not bad for a squad that hasn't won a game and competes with a very popular AAA Baseball team and a growing WNBA franchise for fannies in the seats. This doesn't even factor in scarce ticket $ which may already be committed to our "major "sports-Pacers and Colts.Ours may not be a model franchise, but don't lump us in with the bottom feeders in terms of community support.
looking at Kenns numbers there are some encouraging things. It has gone up over the years. If we could just get Cinncinaiti and Calgary to draw people everyone would be fairly ok. I think Charlotte, Va Beach and El Paso can and would pick up if the managment kept trying.
Re: Blast True. 438 for a crappy Tuesday night in the A-League is absolutely not indicative of much other than it was a crappy Tuesday night in the A-League. Indiana is usually better than a lot of teams when all is said and done (at least in announced numbers...I'm told maybe 150 people were there Tuesday), but has traditionally struggled midweek, as have many other franchises. There are some teams that can draw well during the week (Portland, relatively, being one of them...I know you're disappointed sometimes, but, jeez, it's A-League soccer, look at the established norms for crowds in the league outside Rochester), and Indiana isn't one of them. But as long as the league insists on playing more fixtures than there are weekends, weekday games are inevitable. All that being said, the opening night giveaway was not a particularly good idea. The jury is still out on how effective it was, and I wouldn't use Tuesday night as an indicator. But I doubt it will end up having done much except cost them money without much benefit.
Re: Blast You also should consider that the numbers are inflated with the 3,987 that showed up for the freebie first game. Consider that game out and the Tuesday night game as aberations and you still aren't getting more than 2,000 per game. Better than some, but not as good as that market could draw in my opinion.
Maybe. I worked for that club, and I think there's an upside, but it's not a Portland-sized upside. There are those who have issues with management, and had the proposed stadium in the suburbs happened, I think they would have done better (not a magical doubling or anything, like they were leading people to believe). I think a properly-run club in a better stadium situation could do 3,000 a night in actual attendance, maybe. They're not doing anywhere near their announced numbers.
attendance rhino game for sat looks like another rain game attendence will be down again so far 4 home games and its been rain and cold for all.
Kenn, I know that the "Boise" CBA team keeps a very strong track of who purchases tickets from Boise and who buys in their venue in "suburban" Canyon County. Awfully easy when most tickets are bought on cards because tickets are just barely expensive enough... at least for the good seats. Were you able to get that kind of information with the Blast? I'm concerned that, depending on certain factors that don't exist for Boise basketball but might exist for potentially suburban Portland soccer (curse the thought, but keep an eye on ownership), suburban locations are generally not the best idea.
The location in question that they were going to build a stadium in was only quasi-suburban, as it was right off the interstate that loops around the city. Indianapolis is great because you can get just about anywhere in the metro area (when it's not rush hour) in about 20-25 minutes. The location they were planning would have been within easy access of most of the population of Indianapolis, a much nicer location (at least reputation-wise) than the place they play now, and right smack in the middle of the single biggest youth soccer park in the metro area. It would have done just fine. But it won't get built now. We had a great database guy. Only problem was, the powers that be (and were) had their own ideas about what information to ask, and from whom, and so the information to which you refer, which I wanted to get, was in short supply as most of the day-to-day energies were spent just trying to stay alive.
rhinofan, what are you talking about. Saturday is supposed to be the nice day, with the rain staying along the coast... 75 as a high
syracuse is playing at a high school this weekend... I think they are only selling up to 5000 tickets - with 1000 of those people sitting/standing on the lawn/track.
From their website: So four of their fourteen home games will be at this facility. Adjust accordingly when you make your predictions for the rest of the season.
Promotions For Krammerhead:An update from the Blast Promotions Dept. Sat. 6-7 vs. Calgary is "White Castle Tailgate Night".If you aren't familiar with them, White Castle is famous for tiny hamburgers generally eaten by the sackful in the wee hours after a night on the town and known to produce combustible energy that our Government is still trying to harness. And yes, they are giving them away(but you have to actually buy a ticket!).
Started it in '99, I believe. It's only a few hundred of them, it's not like it's going to pack the house. But I'll be there. First game back since the 2002 opener.
Caught the end of the post game interviews on CBC french, and the place still looked like it had plenty of people in there.
