Schmeichel has called it quits at the end of this season with Man. City. He was my idol when I was younger and made me want to be the type of keeper he is. I hope all the best for him and hope that whatever he pursues next will be good for him.
I assume you meant his actions in preventing goals and not his habit of screaming at his defenders. As a City fan, I'm not too sad because the team has had to get along without him for most of the last 3 months anyhow, but it's never good when the game loses an outsized personality like Schmiechel.
I'm glad he isn't. Who wants MLS to be a retirement league. I'm glad Lothar's gone & that Gazza never made it over.
The GoalKeeping position is unique in that older players can still play quite well... we already have Stoitchkov, El Pibe, and others who have played at the downside of their careers and have contributed much to MLS as well.
Yeah, but the standard of goalkeeping in MLS is high enough that SI slots would be much better spent on field players.
Schmeichel was my favorite non-American 'keeper. My friend and I even used his name as a verb from time to time way before Friedelesque started coming into use after WC02. E.g. "Donovan dances through the German defense only to be Schmeicheled at the last moment by Kahn!" Good luck to the great Dane.
Barthez had his errr..."moments"....last year, but has been absolutely world class this season. Ask around, or better yet, watch some games and see for yourself. As for Howard, he would probably be fighting Roy Carroll for the No. 2 spot. Carroll is Northern Ireland's No. 1 keeper.
