A dumb (and loaded) question ...

    Right. It looked like this team was sort of figuring that out (or maybe remembering it?) in real time. As the game wore on they threw in a few nice long passes down the wings to overlapping fullbacks or their wide midfielders, but only a few. It reminded me a little of watching my son's former club team working through this stuff and learning at age 12 or 13, the first time they were really asked to do it. Interesting to watch.

    I remember the coach insisting in one early-season tournament that the keeper play short again and again to his holding midfielder dropping in until the midfielder learned to be able to turn under pressure and move the ball along. It was painful to watch -- the others teams figured out quickly where the ball was going -- but the kid did figure it out.
