"Khalid Shaikh Mohammed, the suspected mastermind of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, was arrested Saturday in Pakistan, a senior official told The Associated Press. Information Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed said Mohammed was one of three men arrested in a 3 a.m. raid in Rawalpindi, a city near Islamabad. A U.S. official said both U.S. and Pakistani agents were involved in the operation."

The War on Terrorism is continuing regardless of what is happening in Iraq.

Apparently the US can walk and chew gum at the same time.

Let's not minimize this. This is a very key very senior guy.

Bin Laden is important, but he's the public face of al Quaeda, not simply a figurehead, but somebody who's main value consists of "image" and money. Getting rid of him would have significant symbolic value, but getting rid of JUST him would not be enough. You've got to nail the next layer under him.

The guy they've captured is really a executive in that layer, a doer, somebody who can orchestrate complex events.

This is a big win for us.

I thought the bounty for him was $5 mill. But money may be starting to become a factor.

The reward for him has been increased.

A few months ago, the Pakistanis shot someone they believed to be Khalid Shaikh Mohammed. The FBI on hand actually congratulated the policeman who pulled the trigger!!! They thought that he "won" 25 million dollars. When I read the article, I feel sorry for the dude. And I wish that I can join the manhunt.

Remember the reward for Bin Laden was only 5 mil before 9/11 (maybe 10, but it was raised significantly).

Boo Ya! One more down in the war. Good for the person or the people that sold his arse down the river, hopefully it wasn't done just for the money.

I wouldn't kill the guy, just let him rot in jail and live the miserable life. Send him to the federal pound'em in the arse jail. The only conjugal visit Mohammed will get is from Bubba.

Isn't capitalism considered a conservative characteristic? Isn't selling your brother considered capitalism? Being to the left of a fanatic doesn't qualify as "Liberal" does it?

I would torture the ba$tard, get all the info we can out of him, turn him over to all the sex starved Bubba's that had an interest in him and then kill him. How's that for an anti-war (with Iraq) approach?

My immediate reaction upon hearing this was, I'll bet we've known where he was for awhile, but just arrested him when it would do Bush the most good in his fanatical obsession with attacking Iraq.

    Sad, isn't it?

Well label me liberal (if you haven't already) as I am a firm believer in capitalism.

Is it treason if you're handing him over to the "good guys? Was the unibombers brother commiting treason?

My fanatic reference was towards religous extremists. I should have clarified. My point was that a Muslim that was not intent on suicide bombings and other "fanatical" behavior could still have conservative beliefs.

    Yes, you are very sad.

I thought a looming Iraq was distracting the USA from the war on terror. Are Mike Farrell and Janeane Garofalo wrong? This completely shakes my worldview.

I think that gives Bush to much credit. I'm not opposed to bashing him but I don't think he could pull something like that off.

Sounds like they are going with Danwoods' plan.

"Roberts and Goss said Mohammed could provide invaluable information to U.S. investigators if he talks.
"We can learn from him, I hope," about what operations "are out there that we can defend against and forestall," Goss said. "This gives us obviously more focus and more clarity on exactly where to go and what to look at.""

Gotta say, if anyone deserves electrodes to the testes, it's this guy.

I'm not in favor of torturing the guy, actually. I've got to assume that these people stand up under torture a little better than you or I would, for one thing. And it's public record that any idiotic kind of lie is able to send this country into an orange alert tizzy.

Total credit to people I was not sure of at all - US intelligence and our Pakistan ally. Let's see if they keep coming up with more. And no, I still don't buy the "walk and chew gum" theory, thanks for asking. Either OBL and AQ are our first priority, or they're not. We can't catch OBL with one hand tied behind our back. And for every person we put trying to establish a link between Saddam and AQ was one less person trying to actually find out what and where OBL and AQ was doing.

why do people think we can only concentrate on one thing at a time?

the fbi, cia, nsa, and military are full of hundreds of thousands employees that are all working on different problems around the world. just b/c bush seems to wanna concentrate on iraq in public doesnt mean we are going to ignore; the war on terror, north korea, homeland security, etc.

i guess i dont understand why people are shocked.

    Because they're ignorant.

Loney, you need to keep a macro with "I was wrong" handy. You've needed it quite a bit lately.
