Not MLS related, but what must the Scottish fans be thinking? A 2-2 with the Faroe Islands - a country smaller than the city of College Station? "Scotland reached a crossroads in Toftir, on the rocky North Atlantic coast of the Faeroe Islands (pop. 45,000). The Scots rallied for a 2-2 tie on late goals by John Lambert, the captain of Celtic, and Barry Ferguson, the captain of Rangers. Though Faeroes held Scotland to a draw in qualifying three years ago, this result could have more drastic consequences. Berti Vogts now has an 0-5-1 record in full internationals as Scotland's coach, and the Scots likely will have to win at least one of the next two matches against Iceland to remain in contention." Lordy. And this: "A week after English Premier League champion Arsenal announced it has lost $33.88 million last season, Scottish power Rangers announced a $79.56 million loss, an increase of more than $41 million over the previous year." So that means Rangers has lost $117 million in the last two years? Thank God MLS has had pretty strict budgets or this bursting of the soccer bubble would have killed the league. ITV, the Serie A TV problems - MLS looks pretty darn stable in comparison.
But don't you think MLS should end its isolationist policies and be like every other league in the world (and by that, I mean the big four European leagues), even if it means the end of professional soccer in the US?
I have a question about the open cup, forgive me if it's stupid. It says it's open to ANY team in the country. So can the local men's rec league team enter the competition? Do they do it and have the preliminary rounds way in advance? Or is it just D3, PDL, A-league and MLS?
Fire in danger of missing postseason for 1st time Interesting note on Earnie Stewart possibly playing with the Galaxy next year. Stewart, Jones, and Ruiz together could be really dangerous.
It's truly open, and a pub team made it pretty far a couple years back, losing to the Mid-Michigan Bucks. Had they won that match, they would've played the Revolution. Of course, since the Bucks won 6-0 or something, the likelihood of a trip to Foxboro was out of the question pretty early. But the prelims are pretty early. If the Bigsoccer Crash didn't eat all the threads, you could've gone to this forum and found all the info you needed. https://www.bigsoccer.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?forumid=86
The webpage I've linked to below makes for interesting browsing, MtMike. It lists all U.S. Open Cup winners since 1914. Past US Open champions include Robins Dry Dock in 1921, Eintract Astoria in 1955, and the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1979. http://www.jump.net/~netminder/quitameehu/opencup/cup-winners.html
I love Earnie! That would be sweet if he would come over to play in the MLS. As a Quakes fan it would bite seeing him in L.A., but I think i could get over it. Earnie rocks.
I thought the "be like the rest of the world (And by that, I mean the big four in Europe)" part would be the tip-off. I really don't like using those smiley things. But, no I don't think that-- my point was just that people always mean be more like England, Italy, etc when they say "be more like the rest of the world"...
