It looks like there is going to be an 8th team for the league launch next year. And one of the pirmary investors will be NBA player Steve Nash. It doesn't mentioned what city they will play in. But these are listed as possible cities; San Francisco Bay area, Cary, N.C., Philadelphia and Vancouver, British Columbia. http://www.thestar.com/Sports/article/300296
No eighth team yet. They are investing in the league, not a team. From the release: ""While Nash and Mallett will not operate a team, their investment will fund the ongoing development of WPS and is specifically earmarked for new media ventures and initiatives."
My bet would be either Vancouver or the San Francisco Bay Area. Either way is good for the league and to boost up the west coast team numbers. The case for Vancouver has Nash's brother who for the Whitecaps. So he has family there, however the Whitecaps already have a woman's team with a good investor. And in terms of ties to the San Francisco Bay Area, he went to Santa Clara University. The Earthquakes will be playing at Santa Clara until they get their own S.S.S. So the Bay Area team would be able to play at both stadiums. Also the league is based out of San Francisco. Just a few thoughts. I may be wrong, and they end up playing in North Carolina. Nash could also could decide investing in one of the other seven markets.
I guess that I missed that part that they wouldn't be operating a team. But it doses mention that there will be an 8th team and then lists the prospective cities. I guess I assumed that the two were tied.
Why does Nash want to invest in a women's league? I mean come on! Perhaps it's because he can't join any group for MLS, but I would think that the rospects of joining a growing MLS would be much more attractive than a women's league. I'm just disappointed because I think Nash could do more good for soccer promoting it on the men's side, rather than the women's.
Someone wants to invest in American soccer and someone complains about it. There really is no pleasing some people.
What's wrong with investing in women's pro soccer? I'm an avid Chicago Fire fan who goes to as many WNT games and and traveled to go to former WUSA games also. Women's soccer is not the same as mens but let me tell you, just as good and sometimes cleaner and more entertaining. Different tempos and sometimes refreshing. I would rather see a good women's game then the crap you see on the mens game sometimes. I'm glad he's investing in WPS.
Some men just love women more. I'm one of them. Guys loving guys just not very appealing to a lot of men.
Here's another article that deals with Nash's investment. If you read the articles it's seem pretty obvious why he's investing; he's got daughters. http://www.miamiherald.com/628/story/413416.html
