If he's calling in six from DC, it looks like this could be very similar to the Ecuador friendly in Columbus in June '01 with a mostly Euro-based camp along with players from the teams who are off that weekend (that's the game where Mastroeni, Petke, Thorrington, and Enochs got their first caps -- and the camp in which Mathis was injured).

San Jose and DC are off the weekend of the Wales match, so we could see a few unexpected people from the Quakes too (Agoos? Ching? Mullan?), in addition to the obvious guys like Donovan and Mulrooney.

I haven't read Arena to have said he wouldn't call in players who were playing that weekend, but if DC has six coming in, that seems possible. If he does it that way, the pool to draw from looks something like this:

    F
    Ching
    Quaranta

    F/M
    Kirovski
    Donovan
    Mullan

    M
    O'Brien (if ankle comes around)
Reyna (likely not be ready until Confed Cup)
    Lewis
    Stewart
    Olsen
    Lagos

    M/D
    Convey
    Mulrooney
    Corrales

    D
    Cherundolo
    Berhalter
    Barrett
    Vanney
    Petke
    Agoos
    Gibbs

    G

    Friedel
    Rimando
    Cannon
Hahnemann (if not in playoff final)
Keller (ruled out in Washington Post article today)

Good points, but don't you think there will be any Chicago or Colorado players called up?

Petke is off that weekend. Only DC and SJ are. Jolley will be playing against Dallas on Saturday in Giants Stadium. Since Arena seems to be pulling six from DC United (a very high number), it appears he may be limiting his call-ups to guys who are off that week, meaning this will be primarily a Europe-based team.

I wouldn't be shocked to see Thorrington called in. It's not like he deserves it, but he may be in California anyway (perhaps talking to MLS about his employment situation?) and Bruce might add him for numbers to practice with. Heck, he might even play him some minutes to showcase his talents to MLS.....

If you are talking about SJ players called in, Donovan, Mulrooney, Agoos and Corrales will be locks to get selected. I would have added Eddie Robinson, but his injury situation is not cleared up yet....

I have my doubts we'll see Lagos, Mullen or Ching.

What about Conor Casey? Not much space at Spartan Stadium, so a target forward is a must....

Six DCU players? Obviously scoring goals is not a priority at this point for Arena.

If all you've got is DC, SJ, and the Euros, you've got to get forwards from somewhere! Otherwise, we're talking about starting sometimes-midfielders Donovan and Kirovski, with only often-midfielder Stewart and Tino Quaranta in reserve. Given that Donovan and Stewart, especially, may play some midfield, another forward could sneak in. Who else is there? Conor Casey is about it.

You're assuming the problem with DCU is the players.

add the euros in and the Above roster's satrting 11 would be better than the one we had vs Mexico

    -----------------------------------------
    ---SC----Berhalter----Gibbs---Barrett
    -----------------------------------------
    -----------------JOB--------------------
    ------Olsen----------------Lewis--------
    ----------------Convey------------------
    ------------------------------------------
    ----------LD---------------Kiro----------
    ------------------------------------------

The one player I'm not sure abotu would be Cory Gibbs. I've never actually seen him play so I have no idea if he is better or worse than Defender/Thug Mike Petke

He's had some hype because he signed with a Bundisliga team. After his first season that team dropped to B2. This season it is about to drop again to B3. Make of that what you will.

I believe he's only been called into 1 camp and couldn't go because he got injured. I'd like to see him get called into camp again before him actually making the bench or getting PT with the full squad.

I believe there are other young defenders in MLS who are just as good as Gibbs.

You wouldn't be throwing the name Dunivant around, would you? ;)

Could we see the return of Wade Barrett to Spartan Stadium? Perhaps Joe Cannon as well?

I think they're the best team in the MLS right now when it comes to NOT scoring. :)

Is this a reward for them having such a GREAT season so far or does arena have Alzeimers and thinks this is 1996???? Maybe someone should give him the mls shootout so he can look at all the games that are being played in 2003

Will he call in that goalkeeper that plays in South America?

Did I see the name Agoos about 10 or 12 posts ago? Surely you jest. I think the Goose proved something to BA last summer. Put a fork in him.

Agoos deserves a send-off, where better than in his home stadium.

If I'm BA, I'm calling in:

GK-Friedel, Cannon, Rimando (Keller is out?)
D-Petke, Barrett, Agoos, Robinson (if healthy), Cherundolo, Berhalter, Gibbs, Mulrooney
MF-Convey, Stewart, Olsen, Corrales, O'Brien, Lewis
    F-Donovan, Ching, Quaranta

Starting 11: Friedel; Barrett, Agoos, Petke, Mulrooney; Quaranta, Lewis, Convey, O'Brien; Donovan, Ching

I'm starting Quaranta on the right flank despite our abundance of right mids and lack of strikers because I think that's where he'll play most of his international soccer, and because I want to see him match up against the best left mid in the world (Giggs). Since Giggs probably won't play 90 minutes, Quaranta starts there; at halftime, Olsen comes in for Ching and Quaranta slides up top. Speaking of which, Ching comes into camp because we really don't have many other options (Kirovski and Casey have done nothing to earn a call-up at this point) and he gets the start because even if he's not the greatest skill-wise, he's played pretty well this season, seems to mesh well with Donovan, and is a similar type of player to McBride, which will help the rest of the team. Agoos gets his last 80 or so minutes of international football in front of his home crowd.

Yep. He played against DC last night, but is going from there to have bone chips removed from both elbows. He'll be out through the Confederations Cup, but if he heals well, he should be available for the Gold Cup.

All of the above from the Washington Post: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A46993-2003May12.html

    It's also been reported here:

Can't imagine O'Brien will be called up. Ajax play on both the 25th and the 29th. This probably applies to Barrett as well.

The Danish season plays games in a lot of the summer. Barrett was a fringe player anyway and with him struggling somewhat to see the field on a not-so-good Danish team, I am not sure how good his prognosis for Nats time in the near future is.
