regarding the chicago article on the stadium prospects- this all sounds good that there seems to be constant talk about their stadium in numerous counties. i don't know anything about the areas they are talking about, but the interest alone is good. .....or do i think its good just b/c i am from the nyc area and we soccer fans have been screwed with for years in regards to a stadium. who knows
sorry about that... i was running late this morning in addition the article from the daily pennsylvanian is not from penn state... but rather penn univerisity ugh
The Preki piece is pretty standard stuff -- aging athlete doesn't want to stop playing, has lots of drive, amazes his teammates, etc. -- but it's well-written, in-depth and gives a lot of ink to soccer... Worth a look. It's as close to a magazine-style feature as we're likely to get in the US and, as usual, it's the newspapers/news services that give us the best soccer feature writing. EDIT: I should amend this to say that obviously there is some very good soccer feature writing from time to time. SI has written some very high-quality stories and, of course, given lots of ink to Freddy... But there's a reason why I try to check this excellent compedium every day. I'm grateful for it.

I didn't see him, but supposedly there was a guy at the game last night carrying a sign that said "Choose Hoffman Estates". Talked to Peter about the whole deal, hopefully will get the interview online somewhere soon. Interesting. I'd be surprised if they moved from the NSC, really, because there aren't many other options. I don't believe Macalester (where they routinely play one match a year, I believe) doesn't have a press box and stuff like that. Interesting that the Thunder is also one of the best-drawing A-League teams and their attendance is described as "lukewarm". As for Landon, that's unfortunate.
Oh, right on. SI this week has a big ol' feature on Becks as well, written before the deal, obviously.
What game was the Orange County Register watching and who is Williams? Because the player who I read that scored the game-tying goal, his last name is Walker. "I just like to come in and attack," Williams said. "Like (Frank) Yallop (the Earthquakes head coach) says, 'Get on the end of things in the box and try to finish them off.' That's just how it is." Williams saw his opening as midfielder Ian Russell was drawing defenders toward him, so Williams ran toward the front of the net. Galaxy defender Tyrone Marshall was turned around on the play, and Russell passed the ball to a wide-open Williams. "I saw Ian beat his man, and he drew two guys and I was just right there for it," Williams said. "I yelled for it, and he crossed it perfectly. It was an easy one."[i/]
i think i speak for gpk as well, but i'm just glad that people make use of this... i enjoy reading the articles (most of them... i don't read all of them)... it really doesn't take me too much time (today around 15 minutes)... but it's always nice to read that people like it... or even just the comments people have about the articles, as that tells me the same thing
Re: Re: 6/19/03: Late not to hijack this thread cause this has been discussed in depth in other forums, but. GET HIM AND DMB and whoever else is going to play a crucial role at the World Cup OFF THE OLYMPIC TEAM. what the hell are they thinking?
very worrying article about donovan. burned out at 21, no rest in site. while it says he still gets up for games "hours before the match", reading between the lines it doesn't sound like he gets up for games at all. the guy needs some serious downtime in november and december before wc qualifying starts in january.
i think that some of that might just be an overall maturity and professionalism too. going about games in a more workman-like manner than getting your nerves all in a bunch. but yeah very very worrying because you know that soccer players get burnt out with their scheduals, but to talk about it in such a public way is a little concerning. i definately agree they should shut him down hard core after this season for a month or two, maybe even ease him into the qualifying. no one says he nessicarily has to play the opening match against Curacou or whomever we're playing. i equate his situation to a young pitcher in baseball. if you ride them too hard when they're young, you're going to run into trouble.
Re: Re: Re: 6/19/03: Late Maybe they were thinking that the Olympics are in 2004 and the World Cup is in 2006? I know what you're saying though, qualifying and all that. But I think maybe they're thinking that if we can medal in Athens, that would be a very good thing for all concerned.
One Los Angeles newspaper found a fan with a great ability to express himself. "This guy (Philip) Anschutz has built a cathedral to the sport, but he's priced out the congregation," said the fan, who paid the $45. "Those are the prices I paid last year to see Arsenal and Manchester United." Funny But i have to think 20000 should be more or less what weekend games will get
Re: Re: Re: Re: 6/19/03: Late i know that they're two years apart but with qualifying being longer and earlier this cycle it just doesn't seem to make sense to me.
