    On this date.....
    • 1989 - San Diego beats Dallas 1-0 in the lowest-scoring MISL playoff game ever, a semifinal Game 7 that sends Sockers to the finals.
    • 1998 - The Chicago Fire beat the Los Angeles Galaxy 3-1, snapping LA's MLS-record 15-game winning streak (the Galaxy had won the last 6 games of 1997, and their first 9 of 1998).
    • 2000 - 40,303 fans see Luis Hernandez make his home debut for the Los Angeles Galaxy in a 2-1 win over DC United.

    More news

Not from here, but I just thought it was ironic:

Is there an alternative to the play-offs? (Square Football)

    Oh, the horror.

Adu Scores in DC United Loss (Chicago Daily Herald) - you knew that headline was coming some day.

Teen Adu shows off his talent in loss (St.Petersburg Times)

    Teen's dreams (Denver Post)

Too Many Teams Are Satisfied With A Tie (Soccer365.com) - "But before you ask ‘so what is the league supposed to do?’ I’ll admit there’s no clear solution to the problem." Okay, then. But I wrote a column about it anyway because I just thought I'd point out to you that there have been a lot of ties so far. Thanks.

Why does this article say that they can get in still with a win over Calgary? Calgary has nothing to do with the US Cup...am I missing something?

I believe it's because after the primary qualifiers (the winners of the five two-legged series, of which Seattle was not one) are the secondary qualifiers (Charleston as A-League Champion and Minnesota as A-League runnersup) and the final A-League qualifiers are:

Since I believe Charleston won over Atlanta, they didn't have to use their secondary qualifier status, so I believe they will use points 3 and 4 above. So Seattle can get in if they have one of the two highest point percentage in overall league games by the end of the weekend. 8 of the 10 US-based A-League teams make the Cup, apparently, so their chances are good.

I saw this article while doing my news run this morning. I will sometimes omit posting articles that have a high, "duh!" factor.

    - Great that my Micheal Preston Theory is ringing true. Someone posting a link to a stupid column on Soccer365? 100% of the time its gotta be something Preston came up with.

    - I like the phrase "billed as America's soccer championship" in the Sounders article. "Billed as?" It's the oldest tournament of its kind in the US.

    - Oh, so that Adu kid does have some skill...

    - Nice to see too the Metros picked up another international. I was worried they didn't have enough.

    Re: More news

True that. So I'm guessing Brenes is a TI. But could somebody explain this part:

Brenes's move to the MetroStars had been held up because of the restrictive FIFA transfer period, which does not open in M.L.S. until Aug. 15. But United States Soccer officials granted Brenes a waiver yesterday to join the MetroStars.

How the hell does one earn a waiver? Were the MetroStars in discussions with Brenes pre-FIFA ruling? And is this something that any national soccer organization can do (for example, could the England FA have granted a waiver to Donovan for the loan)?

For those of you innundated with Adu, do check out the goal on MLSnet -- it's a great one. What's almost as great is his quote about the goal:

"It boosts my confidence a lot," Adu said. "Now I'm having a lot of fun. It wasn't fun at first. Guys got to watch out now because I'm back to the old me."

Back to the old me. Priceless.

He spoke quite a bit about Chivas, actually, in the group setting. I don't know when the Southtown got him one-on-one, but he spoke at length about Chivas to everybody else.

So I guess Charleston will use its A-League Champions exemption spot and that means Seattle can only get the first at-large bid. Or something.

    Re: More news

I have an idea. Why not play tra 10 minutes or so.

Or, if that does not work, how about a tie-breaker that has a clear winner. Like the penalty shootout. But to give the goalies a chance, have the shooters start 35 yards out and run at the goal. Gie them 5 seconds to shoot. This way, teams will play to win rather than tie.

You know what I would like to see? Teal uniforms.

And the Wizards should have a rainbow design, like "Somewhere over the Rainbow" in the Wizard of Oz.

    Re: More news

    Sorry for the confusion.

In short: how can this transfer take place? Our transfer period opens up again Aug 15th, but US Soccer granted Brenes a waiver. Is granting a waiver completely arbitrary, or am I missing something?
