    The Trofeu Joan Gamper is named for the club's founder and former president.
    Inaugurated in 1966, the Gamper tournament is played every August and originally had three clubs join FC Barcelona in a semifinal and final format. Fixture congestion forced organizers to reduce the competition to a one-off match since 1997 with Barça playing against an invited opponent. Apart from Barcelona, Germany's 1.FC Köln is the only other club to have won the trophy more than once (1978, 1981).


    Italian champions Inter Milan, who lost to Barça 2-1 in the 1996 Gamper, kicked off their defense of the Serie A Scudetto on Sunday by drawing 1-1 at home against Udinese.

    Among the pre-match ceremonies will be a rememberance on the life of Nicolau Casaus, who passed away on August 8th at age 94.

    Penyesupporter (the Buenos Aires chapter is named in his honor - he was born in Mendoza)...

    Prepared the anti-Franco worded keynote speech for the 1957 Camp Nou inauguration...

    I would imagine so, he's an Inter player and a key component of their squad. He's never worried about bad blood before, why would it matter now?

    I watched the Inter-Udinese match and he was in the starting XI. But mid-way through the 2nd half he got kicked in the forehead while attempting a header. He seemed to recover okay but was then subbed out approx. 10 minutes later. Whether the subbing was tactical or because of injury I don't know (Inter was leading 1-0) but he slapped high-fives with everyone in the dugout and then waved to the tifosi in the Curva Nord. Showed no signs of injury, imo.

    Thanks for the info on Figo. I hope he doesn't show, since this game is about presenting the squad to the Camp Nou. His presence could quickly turn it into soemthings else entirely.

    According to goal.com Figo is unlikely to play. Should be an entertaining game even without the added tension old Luis would bring.

    Since we're talking about presenting the squad, does anyone know what kind of ceremony it is when players are walking in onto the pitch one at a time, and the stadium has special light-effects...? I saw a clip of that on TV featuring Belletti in 06-07 home kit, when they were talking about his departure to Chelsea. I also saw a similar thing with Porto in a Quaresma compilation on youtube, I'll try to find it and post a link.

    This should be a fun match, but it is kind of awkward too in light of Puerta's death. I dunno if it will make the players more somber and less indulgent in tricks and "fantastico"-ness.

    So if it starts at 22:00 in Barca it will start at 2pm pacific?

    And why would they play a match at 10pm :eek:

    seriously, i am a little bit ashamed of this move. first of all, 10% of proceeds? if you're going to make a statement, you should make it 100% of proceeds. second of all, the guys funeral is today. hopefully, there is a huge memorial for puerta at the game. regardless, i am still embaressed.

    1pm Pacific. (subtract 3 hours from Eastern U.S.)

    La Liga often schedules a Saturday fixture at 10pm local time. Valencia-Villarreal last Saturday, for example.


    I heard Puerta was being buried on Thursday.

    Richarded, I agree that 10% is really low. They can definitely do better than that. It would've been nice to just cancel the game altogether, as the funeral was today.

    I think I may have finally figured it out...

    The 8 our difference applies for the GMT time zone, not Barcelona. Barcelona is different...9 hours. So the game is at 1pm pacific standard time. Google it if you are not convinced.

    Couldn't agree with you more. The 10 % proceed sis laughable


    I couldnt believe when I watched the Sevilla live match and Puerta passing out completely. Very dramatic pictures
