That's what I heard from a friend who has connections to Metrostars staff. The Opening Day Ticket Plan has been a success so far: http://www.metrostars.com/Merchant2...oStars&Product_Code=TIX2003&Category_Code=TIX
Highly unlikely. There's been no major signing like in the 2000 season opener (Lothar Matthaus) that drew a huge crowd. Also, kick-off isn't for another 2 1/2 months, so it's hard to make a serious prediction. Best case scenario is 30K.
We may not have Lothar, but we have Clint Mathis, US's top player. Along with future US 'keeper Tim Howard, Eddie Pope, 2 time World Cup vetern, and Jaime Moreno, vetern of 4 MLS Cups.
I think it's hilarious that those two sentances were actually written one right after the other. Anybody see the irony?
Well it's saying that the prediction of 30K isn't a serious prediction either or it is a HUGE error in logic.. I'm betting it'll be somewhere in the middle but that will be a nice crowd.. If I had to bet my life, I would bet on the higher figure, though.
Barring a major acquisition, or a good marketing campaign, my guess is that fans will take a "wait and see" attitude torward this team. There is too much bad history. Giants Stadium is still a liability, (more so with turf.) The season ticket campaign was based on the new logo and kit!!!?!!?! Even people in my town who followed and liked the draft (yes there was A LOT of discussion yesterday at youth indoor soccer and at youth ta kwon do as I was wearing my Metro sweatshirt) are saving their money for the Man United "Beatles" tour. I'd be surprised if the opening day crowd equals last year's.
Without any new big Hispanic or international star, I will wait to see how Marco Velez - the very first PR player from the Island to be signed by MLS - performs before openning day. In Puerto Rico we dont have a major soccer tradition, but more than a million of us live in NY/NJ metro area and a good marketing campaign - that should include the Spanish media - could be the key to get some of us back to the stadium...
If the Metros could draw 40K on a regular basis, there might not be a need for a 30K Harrison. With 40K, the Metros could negotiate a better deal with njsea.
Sta ti je bogati?? lol!! Ne treba nekoga iz Europe da bude 40,0000 ljudi!!! America ima svoje dobre igratce.. ciao!! Bog I Hrvati!!
This is rather ironic. You say you can't make a serious prediction and then you haul off and set a ceiling on the number. Nice job.
I think 40,000 is a bit overstated! However with the moves we made and the team we have we should be able to get 30,000. The launch of the new logo and uni doesnt hurt. MLS is still the nest valued sporting event out there so go opening day and get on the band wagon now!
The regular Metros posters here understood what I meant. The average home opening day crowds have been in the 30K area, so there's nothing else to indicate that it will be significantly over what we've had in the past. Fans don't come because of new logo's or new coaches. I agree with someone who noted that fans will take a cautious approach since we've been burned many times before. Stevedm- I agree.
let's not forget: Bob Bradley = NJ soccer community maybe there won't be a 10,000 person spike due to his arrival, but a strong connection to youth and college soccer networks will make a difference in the long run, and perhaps for a season opener as an isolated event. or something.
I think its too premature to say that 40K will show. We are still almost 3 months away from opening day at Giant Stadium.
So why quote his post about the Metros not averaging over 30K for a home opener with numbers you provided that agree with his post?
