Never started a thread before so I thought I'd give it a shot.

Just read this article and aside from saying that Babel doesn't have experience as a winger in the 4-3-3, it had some good points. Nothing new to dutch fans but I haven't seen any threads dedicated to discussing this. I am definitely interested in seeing us try the 4-4-2.

    The U-21's played a 4-4-2? That's news to me!

Yeah they did. Cruijff was even talking down the performance of the U-21's because of it

If you`ve got the right players always play 4-3-3.
that is the only to be different from other nations. If we play 4-4-2 there are a lot of countries who can do better en we will be one of many

Right now we should only play 4-4-2 because that'll allow us to field our strongest midfield

i fully agree with this statement, but of course i am reminded of the gerrard/lampard situation the english national team has struggled with. the best team we can put out might not just be the best 11 players our country can produced. unfortunately, i think that the teams van basten have been fielding dont apply to the category of best 11 or the category of best "team". oh well.

You leave a lot to be desired with this statement Amstel. What is this mystical midfield you speak of?

    I come up with:

    -----------------VdS
    Melchiot-----Heitinga----Mathijsen----Bouma
    RvP-----de Zeeuw-----Sneijder--------Babel
    -----------------VdV
    --------------------Ruud

That could be a wicked lineup. I'm hesitant about wasting RvP on the wing instead of up top with Ruud, but I feel better about him on the wing than VdV and I feel VdV is much better utilized in an advanced attacking role. I also don't feel like Robben is as comfortable in that left wing position as Babel is right now. Wouldn't mind seeing Engelaar or Maduro slot in for de Zeeuw either.

The back four is far from definite either, I honestly don't like any of our defenders all that much. But the word on the street is that this is the commonly accepted back four right now. At this point I would be just as happy slotting Bouhla, Urby, de Cler, van Bronckhorst or Ooijer in there. For the record I'm not really feeling van Bronckhorst in the midfield, keep him out of there.

In theory it's a great idea, but putting together this 4-4-2 is easier said than done.

Well for one v Bommel should be at least on the bench, if not starting.
But I doubt that'll happen under Marco.

So my ideal 4-4-2 would be something like this

    --------------------------------Sar-------------------------------

    Melchiot---------Bouma/Bouhla----------Heitinga/Mathijsen---------Gio/Urby

    Vaart------de Zeeuw/vBommel--------Sneijder/Seedorf/Affelay-------Robben

    --------------------------vPersie/Ruud----------------------------------

I put my starters in bold but Oranje wouldnt be losing much by starting the others,
    so its a tossup IMO

EDIT: And I would play vPersie in a bit of a withdrawn position right behind RvN

For Oranje, 4-3-3 since we have quality players all around for it.

Feyenoord needs to go to a 8-2-1 due to the massive amounts of injuries we have right now :|

Why not try a 4-2-4 ? every team we line-up against crowds the penalty box ... i think we need wingers to cause problems on the flanks and corners and spread out their defence. as well as a lot of forwards to put pressure on their back line. I would also stick a DMF in the back-4 so that when in posession we can commit even another player to the attack. Defenders are not our strength, so why do we have to have 4 back there, when another DMF can do. I am not the most knowledgeable on the 4-2-4 ....our friends from Twente can enlighten us but i think we really need to look at putting as much pressure on their back line as possible:

    -------------------------van der sar----------------------

    Melchiot----Mathijsen Heitinga----------------Bouma
    -------------------------------van Bronckhorst------------------

    ------------van Bommel De Zeeuw----Sneijder-------------

    van der vaart-------van Persie----------------Robben Babel
    -------------------------------van Nistelrooy--------------------

    * I am assuming Robben will be in form for the euros

Great lineup, I like it. The chance of seeing van Bommel is pretty much slim to none, so how about Engelaar there? He should be the most familiar with this kinda of setup. Besides he is a giant to win aerial challenges- Sneijder, Gio, and Demy are not quite tall.

If Robben is in form, the Dutch would be a lot more dangerous in a 4-3-3 lineup with
Van Persie - Nistelrooy - Robben

Yeah I like this I must admit. I'd pick Heitinga over van Bronckhorst ;), but you are definitely on to something.

I like that... a nice attacking lineup... but it would leave us very exposed at the back!

i would love to see a 4-3-1-2, although it would never happen, with robben as a supersub, around the 50th minute mark, against the italians on June 9th.

    -------------vds-------------
    melchiot-mathijsen-bouma-urby
    ------------heitinga------------
    -----vbommel---sneijder------
    ------------VDV------------
    ---------RVP---RVN----------

All you have to do is outscore your opponents to win. So I think it could work. :D

    right now
it shouldnt even be a debate
we dont have the players for 4-3-3
and it took van basten 3 years to see that
