Galaxy Would Welcome Chivas - LA Times About frigging time that someone actually asked someone within MLS about this.
Personally I think Chivas at HDC would probably be the best place for it to be. Chivas has a fairly large fanbase in just about every major city though, so they should see fairly good away attendance wherever they go.

An Idiots Guide to Writing a Newspaper Article about Freddy Adu In writing a piece about Freddy Adu, soccer superstar, philanthropist, savior to the soccer fan, there are several key things that need to be included. Talk about his magical skills with the ball. Stress the age, this kid is 14! Your readers will be interested in that. Talk about the age controversy though, people love a conspiracy. Mention his 500,000 salary, and how he hasn't played a game yet. Include a sentence on his Nike and Pepsi endorsements. Pele=Adu? Don't forget to mention the 750,000 that Inter Milan offered him. Mention his first game on saturday. Make sure you compare him to Lebron James, and Michelle Wie Include a 2-3 paragraph piece on his background, as well as a 2-3 paragraph piece with quotes from his teammates, coaches, and other players. Then send it to your editor.
Not one friggin mention in The Oakland Press, The Free Press, or Detroit News that the league kicks off today. Not even a blurb. I find that really odd considering they cover just about everything else going on today in the sporting world.
Don't forget a headline suggestion, where finding a way to use words such as "much" or "ready" garners extra points for creativity.
Hey, I'm not complaining. Every story from a local guy that basically rewrites the AP article and various league press releases shows a commitment of time - no matter how little - that was given to Freddy over something else. To me, that's huge when they could have just run Joseph White's AP article or grabbed something from an alternate wire.
I'm not complaining either, I just don't think I'm going to read another article w/ adu in the title until there's some actual news to report.
... and that's without even touching the Spanish-language stuff ... story in El Mural suggests that Chivas USA will be in California. (This is the paper that reported that San Diego was out of the running a month ago.) http://www.mural.com/deportes/articulo/364956/ Another wire story out of Guadalajara has an MLS VP saying that the Galaxy have refused to allow Vergara to put his team in LA... http://edicion.yucatan.com.mx/noticias/noticia.asp?cx=10$0000000000$2718207 Meanwhile, La Opinion has quotes from Vergara -- still interested in buying Flamengo and Atletico Madrid, moving forward on a team in Peru ... and oh yeah, Chivas USA -- LA is still listed #1, but is a flawed option. It has the fan base but no youth training facilities ... in contrast, Houston wants to build Chivas its own stadium ... decision within 15 days. http://www.laopinion.com/ligamexicana/?rkey=00040402204152469664
If you're in the mood, the Houston Chronicle's Freddy Adu article has a poll to stuff: At 14, Adu to make professional soccer debut
What exactly is he trying to say here? That they sold more tickets in one day than any single game, or more tickets in one day than they sold in one day for any single game on any single day last season?
As hard as it may be to believe, I think he is saying they sold more than what, 22,000 tickets in one day. I just don't think the other interpretation is remarkable in any way--of course that game will sell more than games last year sold in a single day.
I believe he's saying that they sold more tickets in one day for that game than they have ever sold for a game in a single day. There's no way in hell they sold 22,000 tickets in one day, let alone a week.
That is a lot of tickets, but I don't see how the other way is all that impressive. Here's what I'm going by: Freddy will be MUCH bigger on the road than at home. I think it's reasonable to assume that had they opened the upper deck, DC could have got 40,000 at RFK today. The metros have a much larger population base to draw from. Giants Stadium, has been hyping this game. Not the Metrostars, not MLS. Giants Stadium itself has been trying to sell tickets to this game. They want a sellout. At this point I wouldn't be surprised by 60-65,000 at this one. Is it so hard to believe that, with the help of Ticketmaster, they sold a large portion of those tickets in one day? I don't know, I'm just thinking aloud. I could be way wrong.
