Thanks as always Jim. From the NY Daily News: "The list is long - Antony De Avila, Branco, Ruben Dario Hernandez, Lothar Matthäus, Adolfo Valencia and Marcelo Vega, among others. They were impressive foreign players who were supposed to have an impact on the MetroStars. But each one either underachieved or disappointed." I think putting De Avila in there is a bit harsh. But I have no recollection of Ruben Dario Hernandez whatsoever. From the Boston Herald: "The team could have tried out Brazilian midfielder Paulista, a 27-year-old from Uniao Agricola Barbarense, a left-footed player who dazzled against the Revs, scoring two goals in a 2-1 preseason win. Left-footed, fast, precise in his touches with a good, practical vision of the game, this was a player at least worth looking at. Paulista wouldn't have been a token. He was certainly more than capable of holding his own and enhancing this team. Nicol wasn't remotely interested. Why coaches frown on Brazilian players is a mystery. They are consistently among the world's best." Me either. A dangerous lefty opposite from Ralston. Teams wouldn't know which way to look. Naaah - we've got Kamler and some big guy named Joseph with a wooden foot.
From the looks of Guevara on Saturday, I think he'll be a different sort of Metro SI. He's already surpassed Hernandez, Branco and Vega.
I think showing up, not raiding the storeroom stash of free Pepsi, and not getting red carded 10 minutes into your debut sets you ahead of that curve. Not exactly setting the bar that high.
I like the constructive criticism of the Revs on this article http://www2.bostonherald.com/sport/soccer/revs04212003.htm I don't know about their salary cap situation, but they should get someone like Wilmar Perez, the guy let go from the Crew to give Martino the starting spot....He has lots of skills, which is sorely lacking in New England's midfield
I thought that putting DeAvila in there was VERY harsh. I thought that Valencia did reasonably well too. It is just as well that you do not remember Hernandez. He was too small and could hardly get past defenders. Matthaeus just showed utter contempt for the organization. It was one of Stillitano's worst moves ever. And sadly, it was one of MANY bad moves he made.
Crater Lake is snowbound right now, I presume. And beautiful, in a sort of ironic way. Like the "O" in Onstad.
this is a good point. Wilmar Perez was/is a good player; he'd help the Revs in a jiffy. where did he end up anyway?
I didn't think that Comas was a bad player by any means. I'm not saying he's the best player ever for the Metros, but he did make contributions. Heck, I'd rather have had him than Lothar! At least Comas didn't take extended vacations! If I were Charlie, I'd have torn up LM's contract before he ever set foot on the field at Giants Stadium!
