Well, many Brazilian teams, Estudiantes, and Nacional look strong this year. I think any of them would be capable of playing an interesting game with Barcelona.

also seeing Maxi Lopez play against the blaugranas would be hilarious :D

a warrior that even Acchilles would envy!

btw, about Caracas x Grêmio last night. Grêmio played a terrible match. But thats not what I want to talk about.

What I want to know is WTF!

As soon as Grêmio scored the equalizer, the stadium water sprinklers were turned on... ON GREMIO SIDE OF THE FIELD ONLY!!

the dirty tactics that will be used in South America are beyond ridiculous. No wonder we are a backwards continent.

if that happened in Brazil, either CBF or the Superior Tribunal of Desportive Justice would close the stadium where it happened for one or two matches.

If it was an accident, it was EXTREME INCOMPETENCE.

If it was not an accident, and believe me, it WAS NOT (come on, it happened 30 seconds after Grêmio tied the match, and only Grêmio´s side of the field was wet... obviously, some Caracas director believed that it making the ball slippery our goalkeeper would make some mistake... or with a wet playfield our defense would slip... whatever)

But we know CONMEBOL wont do ANYTHING about it. Conmebol NEVER does anything about it. Thats why foreigners dont care about Libertadores. How can anyone in a civilized country like a tournament where sprinklers are turned on in the middle of a match to make it harder for the visiting team??

How can anyone appreciate a tournament where whenever a player will kick a corner, cops with shields must be around the player to protect him from thrown objects????

    VERY SAD

That's true, but if it were Flamengo, they'd give 5 matches instead of 1 or 2. Juan talks some trash in Maicosuel's year and gets 30 days of suspension while Diego Souza and Domingos get in a fist fight and get almost nothing.

Maybe we'll be shocked and COMNEBOL does something about it, but I doubt it. Somebody has to get hurt before that happens.

As much as it sucks that some teams got a bye, and as must as it sucks that Boca Juniors is out, this is still shaping up to be an awesome finish to Copa Libertadores.

A lot of the historical giants of the tournament are still involved. I was just checking out the history of the clubs left in the tournament:

Sao Paulo: 6 times finalist, 3 times champion
Nacional: 6 times finalist, 3 times champion
Estudiantes: 4 times finalist, 3 times champion
Gremio: 4 times finalist, 2 times champion
Cruzeiro: 3 times finalist, 2 time champion
Palmeiras: 4 times finalist, 1 time champion

So the quarterfinalists have among them 27 final appearances and 14 titles.

And of course, you got to also have a Cinderella team, and we have two. Defensor Sporting and Caracas.

It would be nice, despite this Barcelona looking more solid any may also now have a healthy Messi in the lineup.

    Re: 4ºs de final C.Libertadores

Yeah pal, maybe you doubt because you are used to Conmebol and other S.American federations...

brazilian clubs are held directly responsible for anything happening in their stadiums... if some fan throws stuff inside the field, the club may not be able to play in its own stadium for 1 or several matches. Happened many times already, but nowadays, its rare, because INCREDIBLY, brazilian fans STOPED throwing things inside the field!!

Yes, even we south americans (in this case brazilians) can stop throwing stuff inside the field. We are not such barbarians. You can have hope of achieving the same level of civility too!! Its just a question of PUNISHMENT.

The only way a club can escape punishment if someone throws anything inside the field is if the person who threw the object is identified and arrested.

Thus, brazilian fans nowadays SUPERVISE each other, and when someone throws something inside the field, the other fans will give the guy away to security, so their club wont be punished because of the actions of some idiot.

Conmebol should do the same. Its a SHAME to have cops with shields over players during corner kicks...

Atletico Paranaense just lost in the STJD because one fan threw an object inside the pitch in a Copa do Brasil match. Now they will lose a home game (will have to play in another stadium or maybe in their own stadium but with closed gates (no fans at all)).
    source: http://justicadesportiva.uol.com.br/noticia.asp?id=9837

The maximum penalty for throwing objects inside the field is losing 10 home matches and paying a U$100 thousand fine.

in this video, an Atletico Paranaense fan threw a plastic cup inside the pitch. The referee took the cup and because of that Atletico Paranaense might be punished.

the other fans called security and gave the idiot away. Not only he was taken outside the stadium and punished, as the entire crowd chanted BURRO BURRO (dumb, dumb) as also some guys punched and slaped him in the head (haha, ok, I am not claiming we are 1st world already, obviously, kicking the hell out of the idiot is not also something very cool to do)

Bah the 90's were poorer than this decade for argentine clubs in the Libertadores, the matter is, Boca's sucess and the general failure this year has obscured performances by other sides, let's take a look at this decade.

    2000
-Rosario Central, San Lorenzo, River and Boca play in the groups.
-San Lorenzo fails to qualify to the round of 16.
-Central is defeated in the round of 16 by Corinthians.
-River is defeated in the quarter finals by Boca Juniors.
-Boca is the winner of the cup after defeating Palmeiras.

    2001
-Rosario Central, Vélez Sarsfield, San Lorenzo, River and Boca play in the groups.
-Vélez(in the same group of Central) and San Lorenzo fail to qualify to the round of 16.
-River is defeated in the quarter finals by Cruz Azul.
-Central is defeated in the semi-finals by Cruz Azul.
-Boca defeats Cruz Azul in the final.

-San Lorenzo, Vélez and Talleres(who shared the group with River) fail to qualify to the round of 16.
-River is defeated in the Round of 16 by Grêmio.
-Boca is defeated in the quarter finals by Olimpia.

    2003
-River, Gimnasia LP, Racing Club and Boca play in the groups stage.
-Gimnasia fails to qualify to the round of 16.
-Racing is defeated in the Round of 16 on penalties by América de Cali.
-River is also defeated by América de Cali in the quarter finals.
-Boca wins the cup defeating Santos.

    2004
-Vélez, Independiente, River, Boca and Central play in the groups stage.
-Vélez failed to qualify to the round of 16.
-Independiente finished as one of the 4 least placed 2nd, having to play against São Caetano in a play-off round previous to the Round of 16 and losing in penalties(such thing was only used that year).
-Central gets defeated by São Paulo in the Round of 16.
-River is defeated by Boca in the semi-final.
-Boca loses in the final with Once Caldas.

    2005
-Quilmes AC, River, Banfield, San Lorenzo and Boca play in the groups stage.
-Quilmes and San Lorenzo fail to qualify to the round of 16.
-Boca is defeated in the quarter finals by Chivas and Banfield is defeated in the same stage by River.

    2007
-Banfield, Vélez, River, Boca and Gimnasia play in the groups stage.
-Banfield, River and Gimnasia fail to qualify to the round of 16.
-Vélez is defeated by Boca in the round of 16.
-Boca wins the cup, defeating Grêmio in the final.

    2008
-San Lorenzo, Estudiantes, Lanús, Boca, River and Arsenal play in the groups stage, the only time there were 6.
-Only Arsenal failed to qualify to the groups stage, and they were in the same group of LDU Quito and Fluminense the two finalists.
-Lanús is defeated by Atlas, Estudiantes by LDU Quito, River by San Lorenzo in the round of 16.
-San Lorenzo is defeated by LDU Quito in the quarter finals.
-Boca is defeated in the semi-finals by Fluminense.

So yeah, there has been a bit of everything.

Yeah. Sad to say, but it will be tough to beat Barca. Regardless of who ends up being the Copa champion, against Barca the best bet would probably be to pull a Chelsea and put nine players behind the ball. Not my favorite strategy but pragmatically it would make the most sense.

I didn't think my opinion would change in a year.

    2009 Champions League >>>>>>>> 2009 Copa Libertadores

Sure the legs in the quarters have been tight, but seriously, back 2 back 0-0 draws? The higher quality of futbol has been absent.

Caracas was completely dominated and outplayed by Grêmio the whole match. Grêmio had a dozen clear chances and AGAIN, just like in the first two matches (specially the one against Universidad do Chile) it failed to convert them.

But then, Grêmio has a new coach, and we are under the transition from 3-5-2 to 4-4-2. The match against Caracas was only our 2nd match under a 4-4-2.

Caracas only chances were those blackouts in Grêmio´s defense in the last 2 minutes of the match. True, quite important events, but still, the only real Caracas chances.

Still, the greatest joy for Grêmio fans today, since we didnt win well against Caracas, was the Inter defeat to Corinthians, 2-0, for the first leg of the Copa do Brasil final. Inter, touted the best brazilian team by the media... hahaha, what a shame. Even Elephantaldo, the phenomen, scored.
