    Vamos, São Paulo.

Cruzeiro don't play very weel when they're away, but São Paulo, lately, don't play well at all.

    But I believe.

against the odds, Defensor survived octavos!

now we have just only one argentinian and two uruguayans...is there anything changing in south american panorama?

This week break kill some momentum. I hope all teams can pick up from when they started. Don't know what is going on in the Brazilian or Uruguayan League but we won our clausura and will be facing the apertura champions for the overall title during the next two weekends.

In Argentina the smaller clubs are doing better this season than the big clubs. Lanus, Velez, Huracán, and Colón are the in top 4 of Clausura . The debate is, is this happening because the big clubs like Boca and River are declining? Or are the small clubs just catching up because they are able to develop good players. I think it's a little bit of both.

Amazing how similar this is to the Champions League: replace Brazil by England, Uruguay by Spain, Argentina by Germany and Venezuela by Portugal and the brackets look so similar!

If the similarity holds, Gremio should defeat Caracas FC, Palmeiras over Nacional and Sporting over Estudiantes.

If it keeps going the same as the UEFA tournament, the final will be between a Brazilian team and the Sporting, after Sporting defeats Palmeiras by the skin of their teeth in a controversial game (mirror of the Chelsea-Barca) in the semis.

Not really, argentine clubs and the media(mainly) keep disrepecting the its surroundings more and more so this is bound to happen, divine justice i think.

Anyway all the clashes look very interesting it seems the quarter finals will be entertaining.

By the way i don't buy it that Defensor wasn't paying attention to the cup. Still how're they doing in the race for 2008/09 championship?

I really hope that Gremio doesn't beat Caracas with an aggregate of 10+goals like Bayern did to Sporting.

Nacional vs Estudiantes would be great, for old times sake. Too bad they're on the same side of the bracket.

    Re: 4ºs de final C.Libertadores

Perhaps some of your teams and your country's media disrespects other opponents.

However, I would say that within the past decade, Argentine clubs have, overall, been decadent in the Copa Libertadores. Boca Juniores, of course, is the one singular exception, as it reached the final in 2000, 2001, 2003, 2004, and 2007, and it won 4 of 5.

However, if you look at the performance of teams from the two other perennially competitive nations which send teams to the Libertadores (Brazil and Mexico) since 2000, the stats show Argentine clubs haven't performed impressively. In fact, Mexican clubs boast of stats that neither Argentine nor Brazilian clubs can match.

From 2000 until now, all of the Mexican participants reached the round of 16. Exceptions in 2006, 2008, and 2009, when 2 of the 3 Mexican clubs made it to the oitavas-de-final. During the same time, at least 80% of my country's teams made it to the oitavas, with the exception of 2002, when only half of my country's teams made it to the round of 16.

Contrast that with Argentine clubs. During this period, the percentage of your country's sides who reach the round of 16 ranges between 40% and 80%. In fact, we see 60% or less of Argentina's clubs making it to the oitavas-de-final in more than half of all the Copa Libertadores editions from 2000 to now.

Perhaps shocking to Argentine fans is the fact that the total average of this time period's round of 16 teams shows Argentina barely better than... Colombia. Argentina had 61% and Colombia 57%. So that means that roughly six of every 10 Argentine or Colombian clubs who make it to the Copa Libertadores qualify to the oitavas-de-final

But Mexico's clubs have a solid 9 out of 10 and 8.5 out of 10 for Brazil's teams!

From 2000 to 2008, the Copa Libertadores was won by Brazil twice (2005, SPFC; 2006, Internacional); Argentina, four times (Boca in 2000, 2001, 2003, and 2007). But with the exceptions of 2001 and 2004 (Boca Jrs vs Cruz Azul and Boca Jrs vs Once Caldas), all the Libertadores tournaments since 2000 had one Brazilian finalist - and in 2005 and 2006, we had all-Brazilian finals.

The conclusion: if we are to exclude Boca Jrs' very enviable run in this decade, Argentine clubs have done about as well as Mexican sides have... but Mexican sides have fewer berths in the group stage than Argentina does. Which highlights the strength and competitiveness Mexican soccer has brought to the Copa Libertadores, and which proves how we have benefited from having FemexFut's clubs participate. Which means that after Brazil, Mexican soccer has done better than anybody else in the Libertadores this decade (and remember guys, I'm excluding Boca Jrs, I'm not necessarily counting the number of titles).

    Re: 4ºs de final C.Libertadores

And I also must note that in 2009:

    BRAZIL:
Sport Recife, SPFC, Gremio, Cruzeiro, and Palmeiras (Palmeiras reached the group stage via the playoffs). ALL reached the round of 16; Sport Recife is out only because it faced another Brazilian (Palmeiras) and now, Cruzeiro and SPFC will face off.

    MEXICO:
Pachuca, Chivas Guadalajara, San Luis. Chivas and San Luis both made it to the round of 16; they are now gone only due to the unexpected swine flu scare. Pachuca only failed to make it from the playoffs due to Universidad de Chile having the away goal advantage.

    ARGENTINA:
Rio da Prata, Boca Jrs, Estudantes, Sao Lourenco, Lanus. CARP, CASLA, and Lanus all out in the first round; CARP had a particularly embarrassing first-round elimination. Boca Jrs. made it to the round of 16 comfortably and is now out. Estudantes alone stands.

For a traditional soccer nation like Argentina, this is very little.

Gettin' ready for the Gremio game in a bit. So which of the 8 remaining South American teams will join Atlante and Barcelona in Abu Dhabi?

Seeing Barcelona celebrate their European title today, I couldn't help but remember seeing S.C. Internacional defeat them in the 2006 CWC Final. So, as Barca celebrated today, I hope they will remember that they are still not the best in the world. I predict a Brasilian team will whore them this year, just like in 2006. It's time for the World Club Championship to come back to Brasil, for the 4th time.
