This seems like a big question to me roster wise.

    1. If we will go three in the back all the time, plus Adams or Tessman at DM, then I can see why Poch is high on Arfsten and Freeman. They seem comfortable with that wing/wingback hybrid role with more attacking responsibility.

    2. I assume they will be behind Dest or Weah on the right and Jedi on the left. Is Jedi comfortable with that role? Dest seemed to be.

    3. If it’s 3-2-3-2 or 3-2-4-1, who sits next to Adams/Tessman? I assume it’s not Roldan in the end, but that could be wrong. Roldan is safe but too much so IMO. Wes? Are Musah and Johnny out of the picture for good? I assume it has to be someone who can progress that ball. I vote Wes. But Tessman can progress the ball too.

    4. If Poch puts both Reyna and Tillman on the pitch together, I like 3-2-3-2, with CP and Balo up top because both are dangerous counter threats. But then you don’t have room for both Dest and Jedi, let alone Weah. So it’s probably 4-1 with either Reyna or Tillman, Dest Jedi and CP.

    5. I hope Poch has a plan for 4 in the back when that is the best option for an opponent, and that we get to see that before next summer.

    6. On Reyna, throughout his career he has been more effective as a starter than a sub because he seems to take time to diagnose the flow/spacing of a match and then exploit what’s available. So if Poch platoons he and Tillman I hope it is by alternating starts.

    7. I don’t know how many roster spots there will be but unless there are injuries I think Berhalter and Roldan will be displacing better players if they are brought along. JMO.

When you have options like Dest, Weah, Robinson...you should go for 3 at the back. We have guys playing this formation with their clubs. If you don't have those hybrid type wing backs it will never work. Having a presence in the midfield like Tessman, you have coverage. Adams is also coverage, but you lose some forward progress. It depends on your roster.

I really, really want the answer to be "sometimes." But I think Poch is going to settle on "always" so that he can rotate players a lot with little else changing too much. But I worry that we forego some good potential match-ups and make ourselves a bit easier to prepare for if we do stick exclusively with the back 3.
