First up for Lamar Hunt and the Wizards soccer team's new Zards youth program: two dozen kids from Wizards stars Tony Meola and Josh Wolf's Lionsgate neighborhood in south Overland Park.

In addition to game day giveaways and other soccer schmoozes, "the whole idea is it's $5 tickets for the kids and their parents," explains Wizards GM Curt Johnson. "And these kids are the first holders of the Zard Card. Lamar and I were talking to Tony about it, and he said, `Gosh, I've got 30 kids in my neighborhood alone.' So we thought this is the perfect place to launch our first Zard card program."

The program is part of Hunt's relentless drive to sell the most MLS season tickets in the league by the opening game April 12.

The Wizards are going posh plus sporty via a spicy block party next Sunday on the Plaza.

"We're closing off the block in front of the Cinemark Palace," Johnson says. "We'll have the team and all of our Soccer Celebration games set up for the public to experience."

If it takes, the promotion could one day join other vaunted Plaza spectacles like the art fair and lighting ceremony, Johnson says.

"Hey, the Plaza doesn't close off blocks every day. So we're proud of that. And we're hoping it's something we can do yearly."

Why make this a "cup"?

Are American fans that stupid that we need to think that there is something at stake to show up?

Why not guarantee to bring (and play) the Spurs regulars?
