I'm not sure if this has been reported before so here it is anyway http://www.nytimes.com/2004/03/23/sports/soccer/23SOCC.html
It's no secret that Brown wants to go to Europe. Heck, if you asked most MLS players, they'd say the same thing. What's interesting is how MLS and the Revs will act. Based on the quotes, he's out of here. The decision is whether the league gets any value for him and how that affects the Revs. Looks to me like Matt Reiss needs to get some playing time.
I think we're going to see a lot of keepers leaving soon. They're not being paid what they're worth here, and most of them see that they aren't going to get a contract renegotiation or new contract that's going to pay them what they can make in Europe. When keepers like Thornton (a solid keeper, but I don't think most people would rank him in the elite level of US keepers) start heading overseas to ... well, pretty much anywhere they can get on, that's a bellweather of what's coming down the pike. We may see a lot of players (not just keepers) heading out soon, actually.
I'd hate to lose Brown, but I'd also hate for him not to get a chance to play at a high level, especially if that might improve his standing in the pecking order at GK for the U.S. National Team.
It'll be tough for Adin to make the Nats even if he does move to europe. B.A. has already stated that Kasey Keller and Brad Freidel are his top two keepers. after that, I would think that Tim Howard would have the inside track to become heir apparent. Unfortunately, I think Adin is going to be squeezed out simply due to numbers. With that said, I would personally love to see Adin make it in europe (although I would be greatly saddened to see him leave), and to make it with the Nats as well......
I don't know what kind of loopholes there are with the transfer window, but I wonder if the "official" transfer could be completed within the window, and have his new club "loan" him back to MLS so he could finish the season with us and go after the victory parade...
It may be tough for Brown to make an impact in THIS WC cycle due to those reasons, but Brown is still very young for a keeper. I'd like to see him eventually get overseas. He and Howard have all the makings of being the Keller/Friedel of the future, only they don't have the ego problems that seem to sometimes surface with those two. They offer different skill sets. Howard has the faster reactions and reflexes. Brown is better on crosses and organizing the defense. It's key for Brown to get to a higher level of competition, because he can grow into that role (Friedel to Howard's Keller). He could also grow into a Thornton (always good but never getting to the next level).
I doubt that you can do that kind of thing - I think that's what scuttled the Donovan to Portsmouth deal.
