McBride is coming home to help the Crew in the champions cup match on Sunday. I don't know about you, but giving up a chance to play v Arsenal to help your actual club when you need it shows some outstanding loyalty in my book. Totally a class move by McBride, and Everton to allow it. edit: Damn it Jim, stop steeling what little thunder I have.
McBride to Columbus McBride may have decided to return to Columbus because thinks are a little crazy in London right now. Apparently, gas mask sales are surging and people carry them around. It is reported that many London residents are leaving town due to the threat of terrorist attacks. Finally, the British government has recommended that London residents stock up on food and batteries.
"TOKYO — Japan's national men's soccer team has canceled two exhibition matches in the United States next week — including one at Seahawks Stadium — because of security concerns over the war in Iraq. 'It's unfortunate, but we feel this is in the best interests of our players,' Chairman Saburo Kawabuchi of the Japan Football Association said yesterday." this is lame, i guess it's pretty safe to say that we won't be seeing the USMNT play for a while. i hate this war.
Re: McBride to Columbus Where are you getting that? I've browsed the BBC and The Times, and London seems better off than New York or Washington -- two places McBride will be visiting frequently in the coming months.
Re: McBride to Columbus This is incredibly relevant. Especially considering that Brian was living in Liverpool.
McBride to Columbus I saw it yesterday on the news page of the U.K. version of Yahoo.com. My family had planned a trip to London from 3/22/03 - 3/29/03 but decided to re-schedule it for sometime this summer. As a result, I had been keeping close track of events in London. I had tickets to the Arsenal-Everton match in London scheduled for 3/23/02. Unfortunately, I won't be attending it.
Re: McBride to Columbus By not attending you're actually playing into the hands of possible terrorists. They want you to be scared and not travel. They've already done their job.
Re: McBride to Columbus Everybody back in your bunker. I'll let you know when its safe to come out. I'm with hangthadj on this - McBride is just a good guy. And Everton has been class through this too.
How could MLS fail to reach agreement with Everton. How dare this little league stand in the way of the guy advancing an international career. On the other hand, maybe it's McBride's fault. The NY Times had a piece about two weeks ago (which I don't have in front of me right now), but it had a bunch of stupid statements from McBride about how homesick he was, missing Chicago's pizza and some steakhouse in Columbus...stuff you would expect to hear from a two-year-old. If that's what his mindset is, then the guy's a jerk. I know I'm going to be ripped for this post, so go ahead. Have a good time.
I'm shocked that McBride doesn't think the English make good pizza. Just last year I had a steak and kidney pizza with room-temperature cheddar cheese! Mmmmmmmm... Tom
Maybe its that your posts are dumb, and you can never appreciate American soccer for developing. Point is, McBride is the Columbus Crew, he's the symbol of the team, and in many ways, the league. Its understandable that the league doesn't want to seel a marquee player as it continues to grow and build an image.
Nothing like taking things completely out of context. He was probably asked point blank what he missed at home. I read the article, too. It didn't sound like he was whining at all.
The accusation you make in the first half of your sentence is the price I pay for posting original ideas. I'm thinking way down the road about our league and its future. Most of you are satisfied to keep it the way it is forever. As far as the second half of your sentence is concerned, I want American players to develop in the best possible environment (which, of course, is Europe first and South America second). I'm more concerned with them getting their hands on the World Cup during our lifetimes, rather then a couple of hundred extra fans coming to a game in Columbus this April because some "starlet" is prancing about the field. He ought to be prancing in England, and all of you know it. (We can FedEx him pizza and steaks if that's such a big deal to him.)
Um, maybe he doesn't want to? If your country has a decent league and you love your club, what's wrong with wanting to ply your trade domestically if you so choose? No one seems to have a problem with anyone else doing it.
Because we all know (McBride against Portugal) how playing in the U.S. (Mathis agains S. Korea) will never (McBride against Mexico) prepare a player (Donovan against Mexico) to succeed in the World Cup. I love people who are too afraid of America developing to admit that it's already happening.
