Interesting to see former Freedom bench player Keri Sarver trying out for the team.

New York, NY - The New York Power will play their first of five pre-season exhibition matches, when they face St. John's University on Wednesday, March 12 at 7pm. The game will be played at the newly built Belson Stadium on the Queens campus of St. John's University. This match is open to the general public and free of charge.

Power head coach Tom Sermanni will be using this exhibition match as a means of evaluating the returning talent from last season's side as well as the Power's draftees and tryout players. The Power will be without the services of Tiffeny Milbrett (U.S.A.), Christie Pearce (U.S.A.) and Anita Rapp (Norway) who are overseas with their respective national teams. During the duration of training camp, 25 women will battle for 16 spots on the Power roster as the team prepares for its opening game on April 5 in Atlanta, GA versus the Beat.

The St. John's women's soccer team finished the 2002 season with an 11-6-4 overall record after winning their first-ever ECAC Championship. The Red Storm defeated Cornell University in a penalty shootout at Belson Stadium to capture the championship. The Red Storm are led by freshman Kaitlin Schmidt (Centereach, N.Y.), the 2002 BIG EAST Women's Soccer Rookie of the Year. She led the Red Storm with 26 points, 10 goals and six assists, and was also named to the All-BIG EAST Second and Rookie Teams.

"It is a great honor for our program to compete against some of the best soccer players in the country. Hopefully this will be the beginning of a mutually beneficial relationship between St. John's and the New York Power," Red Storm head coach Ian Stone said.

Capping several months of construction, St. John's University dedicated Belson Stadium on Saturday, September 21. The stadium, to be used for the men's and women's soccer programs, is primarily funded by a $6 million gift from Mr. and Mrs. Jerome Belson, Esq. Mr. Belson is a graduate of the School of Law, a member of the University's Board of Trustees and a generous benefactor of St. John's. The new stadium seats approximately 2,300 spectators and is situated on a raised platform, with parking underneath.

The New York Power is one of eight professional women's soccer teams that make up the Women's United Soccer Association (WUSA), the world's premier women's soccer league. 2003 New York Power tickets remain the same price as last season ($25, $20, $17) and the addition of a $10 ticket with the use of a 10-ticket voucher "Power Pack". Along with the Power mini-plan packages, there is a flexible, affordable option for everyone. For 2003 ticket information, please contact the Power ticket office at 1-866-POWR-TIX (1-866-769-7849) or by visiting www.nypower.com.
