With DC United here in Chicago yesterday and talk on the All-American XI focusing on the need to hate the Galaxy, the question of who is the 2nd best team in MLS history began circulating through my mind so I thought I'd ask.

I'm making this post under the assumption that, like it or not, DC United's resume makes them the best overall team in MLS history. Of course there's going to be lots of disagreement on that, but it's my post so I'll say it. :)

To help out, here's a little list of hardware (all teams listed under present day name or name they folded with in some cases):

    ---

    US Open Cup

    Chicago Fire (1998, 2000, 2003)
    Columbus Crew (2002)
    DC United (1996)
    FC Dallas (1997)
    Kansas City Wizards (2004)
    Los Angeles Galaxy (2001)

Supporter's Shield (or best regular season before the term was coined)

    Columbus Crew (2004)
    Chicago Fire (2003)
    DC United (1997, 1999)
    Kansas City Wizards (2000)
    Los Angeles Galaxy (1998, 2002)
    Miami Fusion (2001)
    Tampa Bay Mutiny (1996)

    MLS Cup Winner

    Chicago Fire (1998)
    DC United (1996, 1997, 1999, 2004)
    Kansas City Wizards (2000)
    Los Angeles Galaxy (2002)
    San Jose Earthquakes (2001, 2003)

    ---

I'm going with the Fire, and not just for home team bias of course. Mostly because they're one of the few teams to appear in all three and have had some incredible players come through to boot. But I can see an argument made for the Los Angeles Galaxy too.

They are the only other team to have been CONCACAF champions.

Like, say, cumulative points, winning percentage?

Before Apr. 2003, I'd say we were a shoe-in for 2nd, and would give DCU a run for 1st. Nowhere near as certain nowadays. :(

You're too quick. You posted before I even got the poll up. Darn. :)

If I had a list of cumulative points or overall team winning percentage readily available, I would have made that a criteria too. :(

But yeah that and mostly what the other person said, that you're the only other team besides DC United that's won the CCC.

well back in 1997, I'd have to say the crew... yeah, it's hard to defend that team anymore.

The did win the Supporter's Shield last year (...and then entirely fell apart...).

They, um, have pretty uniforms or something. :)

    Ha Ha, not funny.

Although I can see where you would have somewhat of an argument since San Jose has won MLS Cup twice. However, they have also won the Relegation Boot twice being the worst team in the league in 97 and 2000.

Which brings me back to LA, they have never been the worst team in the league, and they have been Western Conference champs 5 times.

It is a close run between Chicago and LA. I would lean towards LA becuase they have never sucked and been around since the start.

Unfortunately, DC United won it first, and also the "Inter-American" Cup against Vasco da Gama, in the U.S. At the time it was billed as the championship of the Americas.
