If by 8-year cycle they mean three consecutive World Cups, and if you ignore that Australia is a continent, that's already been accomplished by 2022-2030.
Read carefully: "had to opportunity to host a WC". So, it includes OFC, but it's a weak-ass statement. Nothing to brag about. Also, it's BS. In other news, 20 La Liga teams "have the opportunity " to be champions of Spain this season.
I can’t see any way they’d host the Asian Games (or anything significant) in Riyadh during the World Cup. Their current plan has 8 (!!) World Cup stadiums in Riyadh alone. Another consideration is that Ramadan is Nov 11 to Dec 10 in 2034. Maybe they’d just have the World Cup in January/Feb 2035?
january-february 2034 is the most probable time frame considering other events in the region and period of ramadan … but with FIFA you never know it
Having thought about it more, I suspect it will be in October-November 2034 - definitely FIFA will want it in 2034 calendar year - which should be feasible from a temperature perspective.
Wouldn't they just have the WC during the 2034/35 winter, like they did with the 2022 WC? IOW, the WC would be played somewhere between Nov 2034 and Feb 2035, depending on the timing of holidays in that region. I don't see a clash with the winter olympics. Edit: Yeah, I see that Ramadan runs from 12 Nov to 11 Dec 2034, so guess the WC would have to begin around 5-7 Jan 2035, and end on 11 Feb.
I don’t think it’s out of the question that we see the tournament start before Christmas and run in a compressed schedule (like Qatar) through the end of January. That would maximize use of the normal winter break to minimize impact on the club schedules, which is always a primary concern. AFCON 2025 is running Dec 21 through January, as one example. This would avoid a conflict with Ramadan and wrap up before February. The Winter Olympics isn’t necessarily a conflict, since those dates are often in the second half of February anyway, and the climate in Utah can definitely accommodate that. NBC also prefers that it be after the Super Bowl, which has been rapidly moving into mid-late Feb. And NBC will have a big influence on the IOC, especially with it being in the US.
Yes, I think they will opt for winter 2034-35, probably starting just after Christmas - with a break on New Year's Eve - and finishing on the first weekend in February, thereby avoiding clashes with Ramadan, the winter Olympics and the Superbowl. Many European leagues are closed for most of that time while hundreds of millions of people will be on holiday until early in the new year facilitating holidays to Saudi and home viewing.
The Olympics already have their opening date set as Friday, February 10. For decades the Winter Games have consistently started on the Friday that falls on or after February 7. The Super Bowl was played during the Olympics in 2022, and I'd expect that to be the same as long as the NFL keeps it on the second Sunday of the month. The Olympics are only a consideration if FIFA wants to hold the World Cup early in 2034. If they hold it late and possibly overflow into 2035, there are no Olympic Games.
True, but the 2022 Olympics weren't played in the US or anywhere that anyone cares about the Super Bowl. I think with the 2034 Games being played in the US it changes things. As we know, the SB is more than just a 1-day event. It really consumes the sports news for a full 5-6 days and would suck a lot of attention away from the Olympics. So, bad move, imo, to start the Olympics before the NFL season concludes (assuming the SB will be on 12 Feb). Especially, as the other poster rightly pointed out, snow in March is not an issue in Park City. At least, not yet. So, the 10 Feb start date was unnecessary. Oh well...
Since Fifa will do the official formality of announcing Saudi as the WC2034 host today, Lets not forget how it was the joint plan by Fifa and the Saudis all along to get them the Fifa WC 2034. Let me give you the timeline. - Spain and Portugal were expected to make a bid together for WC 2030 - A South American bid was also expected because of the 100 year anniversary - Saudi also registered interest to host the WC 2030, but it was all a tactic - Spain-Portugal were the clear favourites, but due to Saudi’s financial prowess, they decided to add Morocco in their bid to make it a bit stronger - Saudi backed out at the last moment, - Spain-Portugal-Morocco bid was the only realistic bid left now - They of-course won the bid, but Fifa also decided to give 3 games to South America as well citing the 100 year celebration - What all this did was prevent Africa and South America from being eligible to bid for the 2034 World Cup, because of Fifa’s rules amid their involvement in 2030 WC - Due to this, the 2034 bid had to come out of either Asia or Oceania, because all other continents were ruled out - Not only this, Fifa pre-poned the date by which any country could register interest for the 2034 WC - Saudi’s only opposition would have been a joint bid by Australia and New Zealand, but they didn’t register any concrete interest because Fifa didn’t give them enough time - That is how Saudi won the Fifa 2034 WC bid without any opposition because Fifa worked with them to rule out any possible opposition from Africa, South America, Asia and Oceania.
Good recap. I can't recall if the Saudi-MAR bid appeared before or after the UEFA bid included Ukraine. But I do wonder if the Saudi-MAR 2030 joint bid was done with all this already in mind (as they saw Ukraine wasn't going to be viable, so they'd be replaced with MAR).
Cynically, I can't complain about it: the current rotation policy, unless FIFA use this cycle ('26 through '34) to justify abolishing it, would rule out everyone but Concacaf and Oceania for 2038.
Apologies if this has already been discussed, but would a summer tournament in Morocco even possible with the heat? I think a summer tournament in Iberia is probably pushing it these days too. could definitely see this being moved to the winter. Suppose it will depend on how 2026 copes with extreme heat.
Some parts of Morocco (including potential host cities) are quite comfortable at that time of the year. But yeah.... others will be hot. Madrid and Seville will be super-hot too, though 21h00 kickoffs in Madrid should be okay as its a dry heat. The new Bernabeu is a refurbished, mostly closed stadium too, though I'm not sure what the ventilation system is like. But they are not moving the WC to winter because of 3 or 4 toasty host venues.
