This is upscaled 4k, from 1080 cameras. So it should look better than apple, but its not captured in real 4k for those a/v nerds out there.
It's crazy after all these years we are still watching the same quality as HDNET was many, many years ago. I guess a slight upgrade as HDNET used to be 1080i, versus 1080p we get today. From what I understand there are a limited number of true 4K sports cameras across the country for use. I was surprised when not all the CFB playoff games were in 4K and I thought I read it was because of limited cameras.
I've only watched over the air HD broadcasts, which are probably better than anything you get via a cable.
4K is also still crazy expensive and not worth the investment from the broadcasters, hence why most stuff is upscaled (meaning they use regular HD equipment combined with fancy computers make it look better). HDNet was merely ahead of its time. I still miss their Sunday concert series. FWIW, the channel is still around as AXS.
It'll most likely be a long time until that changes. Back when HD first started, ABC and Fox chose 720p because "progressive scan" was supposedly better for sports than 1080i "interlace" was. NBC and CBS chose 1080i. Obviously the best HD is 1080p which not a lot of stuff is outside Blu-Ray discs and gaming consoles.
