No surprises. The Jorge Mendes special. Although his justification was that Matheus Nunes is versatile and can play midfield. And that because of the physical demands of the full backs in the heat, they needed an extra player there. I can kind of get that. But players like Mateus Fernandes, Mora ain't seeing any significant game time until the likes of Bernardo, Ruben Neves or Guedes retire. And having to see Nelson Semedo and Guedes on the NT in 2026...
I don't get his obsession with Semedo. Matheus Fernandes not making it is insane. One of the best midfielders in the Prem this season. I thought he was a lock. He picks ********ing Samu instead? Horta got robbed too.

Lmao Joao Neves will never play RB again.. We now have Nunes on top of Cancelo/Dalot who can play both sides and lord Semedo... Our midfield should be Vitinha, Bruno, Joao Neves.. If we need to rotate players due to fatigue I want to see Samu.. Only experiment player that actually showed up for the friendlies and impressed..
Three simple changes that would make the squad selection much more palatable: Out Semedo Samu Guedes In Palhinha M. Fernandes Horta Martinez claims he took 5 FBs because it's a physically demanding position and he needs a lot cover for them. Ok, there are still better options than Semedo, and one of the CBs can play RB anyway. Waste of a pick. Palhinha is a destroyer and provides muscle in a very lightweight midfield. Exactly the kind of player you want to protect a lead. Matheus Fernandes and Ricardo Horta are two of the most in-form Portuguese players and deserve to be there on pure merit alone. These are the two decisions that I see being most questioned. Additionally: Veiga sucks, Felix seemingly has a divine right to a call-up, and Leao and Neto are totally out of form. At least one of them should have been dropped for Afonso Moreira. It would also have been nice to see a wildcard like Mora in there, regardless how much his development is being stunted at Porto, but that's probably asking too much. The other three, especially Fernandes and Horta, seemed like no-brainers.
The omission of Palhinha is the strangest decision I've seen. Who would not want an anchor like that in your midfield? Samu just ain't it for me chief.. Palhinha is a bruiser and well established within the Selecao so this one was weird.. To my knowledge, we still have until May 30th to change the roster but that might only be reserved to injuries..
Qualifying is set to change for the next world cup, following the Champions League swiss style format.
