I was gonna mention Paraguay ... their display of thugish cheating was a total disgrace too of course, but given the size of Para vs Argentina and their status in world football I decide to ignore them.

In another shock - Uruguay was right there too. Not as bad in the early rounds but their last game was bad.

only Colombia of the South American teams, came out with any kind of credit

It was the same with their rugby team on Saturday. For the first time at international level, I saw rugby players swarm a referee as well as things thrown at him. Truly shocking stuff which will undoubtedly start to filter down to the lower reaches of the game where you already have foul-mouthed parents and guardians; already been witnessed in New Zealand where whole weekend schedules have been cancelled.

So there’s a rule in golf that when approaching your ball, you can do nothing to improve your lie. You can’t stamp down grass, tap down earth, etc. Nothing that materially affects the lie of the ball or your position when addressing the ball. You can move dead material, leaves and branches, but nothing living.

Bryson DeChambeau at the British Open over the weekend was in the long deep rough. Grass waist high. Looking at his ball, the lie, the path to the green, his options. When he eventually chose his club, rather than walking around the ball he walked up from behind. Thereby walking down the long grass. Thereby meaning that his back swing was less impeded by the tall grass.

In golf, you’re meant to call fouls/mistakes on yourself. It usually means a one shot penalty. But if you don’t call it on yourself, a dimmer view is taken and penalties are 2 shots or higher.

He was called on it and denied anything. Argued, shouted, roared. Insisted he did nothing wrong. Penalized 2 shots. Threatened to go home.

Then he pulls the dumbest baby move of all. Says he’s calling Daddy Lumpy and he’ll fix this. Because Daddy Lumpy fixes everything. Look at the red card in sawkerball.

    And thus it begins…

Argentina will face an investigation into the ugly scenes at the end of the World Cup final, Fifa has confirmed.

Fifa's disciplinary committee has appointed a disciplinary and ethics prosecutor to assess what happened after the final whistle at MetLife stadium.

Any player or coach involved in the fracas could face suspension, while the Argentine Football Association (AFA) may also be fined.

Good!! That article lists the crap the Argie team has pulled over the past decade or so. What a bunch of thugs and lowlifes they are.

Yep. The rescinding of that red card will be one of the major legacies of this WC for many, many years to come. As already seen with DeChambeau, it’ll bleed into other sports, but football (and FIFA) will take a long time to recover from this.

Yeah, good point. I think one of the legacies of this WC will be the significant damage to Messi’s reputation.

No doubting that he’s one of the best of all time, but by his own actions (e.g. trying to have Cucurella sent off for covering his mouth) and for being associated with a team of complete c.unts, he’s very far from pure.

Diego had demons and admitted to them, Messi has always portrayed himself as the humble, easygoing guy. I just don’t see Maradona trying to have Cucurella red carded. Or indeed Pele or Cruyff. Whether Messi retires or not, his legacy gets him bumped down a bit on the charts. Hope it was worth it.
