You’re not alone!! I thought MLS started in March. I guess that’s ancient history. We just got another foot of snow. Somehow it doesn’t seem the right time for footy. But that’s a much bigger discussion, especially with the impending MLS calendar change. Anyone watch the opener and care to report? Ps. wish granted… 2025 thread closed. Long live Jambi.
Just watched the 10 minute recap. One of the more exciting game highlights packages I’ve seen of late. And I’ve got some learning to do about our new roster. E.g. Cade Cowell: somehow, I had missed or forgotten that he was now at NYRB. I hope he comes good… my expectations are tempered.
We mauled those guys. Just watched the video and they were flat in the first half ans we were on fire. Should have had 3 or 4 more goals. Also we had a very busy offseason. https://www.transfermarkt.us/new-york-red-bulls/transfers/verein/623
MATCH RECAP, pres. by Provident Bank: Hall Scores Again as Red Bulls Top Revs, 1-0 | New York Red Bulls
In the season opener we dominated the first half and Orlando was the better team in the second half. Horvath our new goalkeeper made incredible saves. Final score could’ve beeen 5-3. In the home opener, same lineup but NE played better defense. We are definitely a more possession based team in years past and are playing a much younger lineup. Two 17 y/o’s and a 16 year old in the starting 11. We need to at least get 1 if not 2 more legit CB’s. We just signed a 20 year old Colombian at CB. So far so good. Next game Sunday March 8th at home.
Were you at yesterday’s match? If so how was the crowd for this opener, compared to years past? The crowd looked light, but then again were still not really out of winter. For me, I’ve missed the first two matches live and only caught the recaps. Don’t know if that’s gonna be a new trend for me or not… too early to tell. I probably won’t know until late April when my travel/life calms down a bit. But I must say there was such a near total cleaning of house during off-season, that it’s gonna take me quite a while to get used to all these new boys!
Crowd wasn’t great for a home opener. Better in years past. Weather hasn’t been great lately and the game was afternoon start time. Most openers are usually nights and I think night games draw bigger crowds. Having said that, I heard a friend of mine who attended the game say what I always suspected. This region/area is not a good MLS market. That’s not the same as having hard core soccer fans. Those two are different. As the season goes on I’m sure attendance will improve with a more attractive style of play and a winning team.
Yes if we somehow end up as a high-flying winning team, in MB’s first year, after a major rebuild, then the stands should fill more. But the days of a near-full arena are probably gone forever… if they were ever here really. I don’t have a great memory for this stuff but I feel like the Henry/BWP era, during the Shield years, had decent attendances that we haven’t seen since?
Never heard of him, but he's got a good resume/pedigree! Maybe the Klopp connection influenced us hiring him?

Whatever. I'm really not sure how much of an asset Jurgen is to Red Bull. Meanwhile, I saw a glimpse of our latest scoreline: Montreal beat us 3-0 in NJ? So far I haven't caught a single game live or in its entirety. For this one I might just skip the highlights too?!
Well the Euphoria of the first couple of games is wearing off cuz we looked pretty bad against Charlotte think they put a touchdown on us not sure if they made the extra point but hopefully they get better at this time out
I had the misfortune of attending the Montreal match where it became clear that we are still very much a work in progress.
Ouch. 6-1 is a demoralizing scoreline. It sure looks like that. After opening with 2 straight wins and looking pretty good, I will admit I thought "hmm, are these guys for real?" But honestly, for the first year in quite a long time, I've not been able to watch any of our first few months matches live. And only a couple of recaps. If they actually suck worse than last year, perhaps I'll feel less guilty for being absent.
