🇩🇪 Sources: The Philadelphia Union is finalizing a deal to sign left back Kai Wagner from Birmingham City, as @thegoalkeeper first reported.Shock return for Wagner, the club's all-time assists leader.Wagner, 29, started all 16 matches he was available for with Birmingham. pic.twitter.com/OIH1f00yPK— Tom Bogert (@tombogert) July 15, 2026 Kai Wagner returning to Philly?
That's crazy. I wonder who initiated that return, Philly or Wagner. Especially since he regularly went 90 for Birmingham.
The Union have a long history of not making impact signings with the summer transfer window. But, that would be so Union to break that habit by signing a guy who was already on their books only a few months ago.
Maybe family reasons? He has young children, and it's not out of the realm of possibilities that they didn't adjust well to living in England? Or maybe his kids miss their friends and school in the Philly burns?

I once read back before the turn of the millennium that Philadelphians were the least likely to move out of the city to another state. A big move for most ways going to Jersey. The rumor is the wife was the one that wanted to come back.

It's about time that MLS stops selling at a discount. Happy to hear the Union holding out for a better offer as they have Pierre back from loan and ready to step in so they can be patient and get a better offer.
When I joined these forums people were complaining about MLS "holding players to ransom". But that was in the NT forums.

That's so Union!

Wagner was on $930k/$1.1M guaranteed when he left. He's gonna be mighty close to DP level with that transfer fee. Edit: Bogert says the transfer fee is under $4M, and Wagner WILL be a DP.
Been saying MLS screws itself over by including transfer fees in the salary cap. If they only counted what a player earns then players like Wagner wouldn't even need a DP tag (assuming he is getting paid the same as before). By the way, Philly should've just kept him in the first place and raised his salary a couple 100ks. Would've saved themselves some dls and a DP by doing that.
He wanted to play in Europe and Brum City seemed to be the right move. Ambitious club who just missed the playoffs. I guess it didn't work out for his family. Reports from Birmingham are that it wasn't a planned departure. He started in their pre-season friendly against Huddersfield.
Did they? I guess technically but they just gave back all the money they received and added in the tip.
