For Sunil Gulati to think the USMNT would win the WC by 2010 just shows how ignorant he was about soccer.

That is what I was saying -- apparently not as articulately as falvo, ie there's no point talking about something that's never going to happen.

I thought Belgium played Spain pretty tough, and could have won. It took another late Spain goal. That Doku guy is a monster. I wonder why he didn’t start against us.

I was rooting for Belgium to beat Spain but I don't mind Spain staying in either because I want to reduce the chance that Argentina wins the Cup. Landon really likes Switzerland though and thinks that Switzerland can beat Argentina. We'll see.

We used to be a bunker and pray team. This World Cup we played the same style every game, no matter the opponent (with a small change when Polisic was out for that game an when played a 4 4 2). That is pretty massive improvement.

In 2004 and pretty much every cycle before this one, we've had MUCH better center defenders and that's a pretty massive hole now. I think we had much better keepers as well but that is a closer call.

The midfield is years ahead of the past and I think the forwards are about equal outside of Bolugun who is the only real talent we have there.

They sat their two best players because they could; they had no respect for us and rightfully so.

I was rooting for Belgium too. After starting fairly slow, Spain has had two monster games in a row. I wonder if they can keep up with France now.

I think it might have been more than "no respect". They had some issues against Senegal. After De Bruyne and Doku were subbed out Belgium scored 3 goals. I think it was their manager's way of rewarding performance / unrewarding lack of performance. And of course you can bring those guys in off the bench. Nice to have that kind of depth.

Why are the American announcers so insipid compared to their British counterparts?

The English language announcers all suck. They spend too much time talking about extraneous things, games and teams not on the pitch. They all root for one team over the other, which is inexcusable. The “British” guys come close to being racist. I wouldn’t wipe my feet on any of them. They are shit.

Shocker - Argentina gets another critical VAR call. I think it was the right call, but amazing how Argentina gets the benefit of all of these VAR reviews. Like *huge* benefits. Are we to believe that there's never a VAR reviewable call that would go against Argentina?

Every time Argentina plays, I can’t help but think the game is rigged.

Didn’t the U.S. also get a yellow shifted for simulation following VAR?
