Yeah it was a cool name and logo and I hated seeing them change it. Same with the Tulsa Roughnecks. They came out with it, used for only 5 years and then sadly changed it to another FC.
How things look after match round one. 🔢#FIFAWorldCup— FIFA World Cup (@FIFAWorldCup) June 18, 2026 GO SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES!!! GO USA!!! VAI BRASIL!!! -G
We were the Swenson's Banana Splits when I was 7. Swenson's is a pretty old ice cream franchise from way back when and they would give us free ice cream when we won. No participation awards for this team!

Yeah in fact there was a Swensons in the same shopppmg center near the baseball field I played at (down the row from Round Table), and pretty sure there was a “Swensons” team. No “Banana Splits” though. Adding a team name after sponsor was a later innovation I guess.
Mexico South Korea is an interesting matchup. One of the few games we’ve had so far between 2 roughly evenly matched good teams. I wasn’t as impressed with S. Korea in their game against Czechia as the commentators seemed to be.
My team was sponsored by Straw Hat Pizza , Cupertino little league, Swensons was in the Oaks shopping center , which unfortunately has been torn down and is a 55 and over community
Even older than me (seriously)! The four oldest head coaches in #FIFAWorldCup history 🤝 pic.twitter.com/RiHilZTYOD— FIFA World Cup (@FIFAWorldCup) June 18, 2026 GO SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES!!! GO USA!!! VAI BRASIL!!! -G
You were very close to me. I think we had a Straw Hat Pizza team as well. I think the league I was in was called "Serra Little League" and we played our games at the diamond at Serra Park (still there but now with fences). I believe it's now called "Sunnyvale Little League". The Swensons near there was at "Loehmann's Plaza" just down the street from there, and which is now almost entirely asian restaurants or markets of various kinds (+ Tae Kwan Do, fitness, and a CVS).
Czechia currently leading South Africa 1-0 in the second half. GO SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES!!! GO USA!!! VAI BRASIL!!! -G
I had a summer job working in Saga corporate, which owned Straw Hat Pizza and a few other chains (Velvet Turtle anyone?) I remember that you could go into the cafeteria at any time and get a scoop of ice cream from the freezer. It wasn't good ice cream, but it was ice cream.
Sorry for continuing to pollute the WC thread with my useless nostalgia, but I have to mention that there was a "Velvet Turtle" at Mary and Fremont in Sunnyvale. That was the big "high end" restaurant in the area at that time. Like, you speak about it in hushed tones .
Exactly! I got taken there once -- near Saga hq on Sand Hill Road -- I remember the cloth napkins. I may have kept one as a souvenir.
First job was working at Longs Drugs in Loehmann's Plaza , my mom still lives down the street , she is one of two original home owners remaining on her street. Anyway back to the world cup
