    16 June 2026
20:00 local time (6:00 PM PST / 9:00 PM EST)

Venue: Arrowhead Stadium (Kansas City, MO) - 76,416 capacity

    ------------------------------------------

    Historical head-to-head record:

1 game played: 1 Argentina win, 0 draws, 0 Algeria wins

Argentina and Algeria have only faced each other once, in a 2007 friendly in Camp Nou that ended 4-3 in Argentina's favor. Argentina's goals were scored by Tevez, Messi (x2), and Cambiasso.

Dear lord was Abbondanzieri having a stinker that evening :D

Only player still in current squad from the 2007 match-up: Lionel Messi
    ------------------------------------------

    Algeria's historical WC record:

    - This will be their 5th participation in a FIFA World Cup (1982, 1986, 2010, 2014, 2026)

    - Furthest participation: Round of Sixteen (2014) -- eliminated in a 2-1 extra-time loss to Germany
    - Highest finish: 13th place in 1982 (eliminated by goal difference in group stage, in which they beat West Germany and Chile)
    - Most recent participation: 2014 (Round of Sixteen), where they became the first African team to score 4 goals in a WC game

Technically, Messi has played more World Cups than Austria as a whole (2026 will be his 6th World Cup, assuming he makes it) :D

    ------------------------------------------

    Players to watch:

    - Mohamed Amoura (26-year-old center foward, VfL Wolfsburg): Finished as the top scorer of CAF WCQ Group G, with 10 goals (the closest goalscorer trailing him had 3 goals). In total, he has found the net an astonishing 19 times in 38 games, including 11 goals in just 7 games in 2025 (best year yet).

    - Riyad Mahrez (35-year-old winger, Al-Ahli): Captain and historic emblem with incredible technical skills

    - Rayan Aït-Nouri (25-year-old left back/winger, Manchester City): Offensive-minded wingback who is known for his dribbling, pace, creativity, and significant offensive contributions (goals/assists).

    - Aïssa Mandi (34-year-old centerback, Lille): Most capped player in Algerian NT history, with 110 official caps.

    - Perhaps not exactly a player to watch, but Luca Zidane (Zinedine's son) made his debut for Algeria in October of this year for WCQ and could possibly sneak himself into the WC squad, although he is not exactly a regular.

    ------------------------------------------

Algeria's form leading up to the WC:

    - Currently on an 8-match undefeated streak (as of December 6, 2025); last loss was a 4-3 defeat to Sweden in an away friendly

    - Youcef Belaïli, a dynamic and skillful winger, tore his ACL in November and will thus likely miss the WC.

    - Finished first in Group G of the 2026 CAF WCQs, with a total of 8 wins, 1 draw, and 1 loss (1-2 to Guinea in June 2024)

    - Africa Cup of Nations:
Most recent participation: 2025, quarterfinals (2-0 loss to Nigeria)
Most recent title: 2019 (defeated Senegal 1-0 in the final)

    - Arab Cup:
Most recent participation: 2025, quarterfinals (eliminated by UAE through penalties, after drawing 1-1)
Most recent title: 2021 (defeated Tunisia 2-0 in extra-time in the final)

    - 5 most recent results:
    - January 2026: 0-2 L vs. Nigeria
    - March 2026: 7-0 W vs. Guatemala
    - March 2026: 0-0 D vs. Uruguay
    - June 2026: 1-0 W vs. Netherlands
    - June 2026: 4-0 W vs. Bolivia

    -----------------------------------------

Fun fact: this match will take place on June 16th, the same day Messi made his World Cup debut 20 years earlier (06/16/2006 vs. Serbia and Montenegro, when he was subbed-in in the final 15 minutes of the match and scored a goal in the 88th minute to seal Argentina's 6-0 victory)

I know that much... But I thought it had more to do with 20 years flying by... That's what I got out of it... I remember that Serbia game like it was yesterday. It was an early morning kickoff and man, what a showing. Good times.

Speaking of Algeria, they will be participating in the African Cup of Nations this December - January. Good to 'scout' them just to see how they do, but better to do that in the knockout stages. The Group stages don't have any interesting matchup ups that involves Algeria.

Algeria showed well their last two WC appearances. Should be an interesting first match. Always liked watching Mahrez play.

Well they looked pretty good to start the AFCON scoring plenty and not conceding, but needed a lucky strike in the 119th minute to get past DR Congo and now lose 2-0 in a quarterfinal to a Nigerian side that failed to qualify for the World Cup. Looking back they had a pretty easy group in WC qualifiers so maybe this shows their ceiling and inconsistency.

Most of the time a team that gets hot during the major tournament itself would be the one that win it or progress far. Germany being unbeaten in 2018 qualifier or Serbia topping 2006 qualifier, its proof to be meaningless.

I didn't had the opportunity to watch any games (I will try later on as we get closer to the WC), but just judging by this tweet alone, the team is not looking good

Lol, and Algerian goalie is going to like he's playing for Sweden in the all yellow outfit. Do you reckon anyone ever buys a replica goalkeeper top?

This is a very weak Algeria team one of their worst to be at a World Cup. If we cannot dismiss them and Jordan with a healthy goal difference might as well not bother.

Netherlands should at least be up by a couple. Algeria not playing their best 11 here, especially in midfield, but we should beat these no matter their lineup. Sidenote; Van de Veen’s recovery pace is absolutely laughable.

Algeria ALOT better with some of their more important players subbed in. Might be for the best for us if Mahrez plays tbh, he is done.

Tbf Netherlands subbed almost all their players but second half I’d say Algeria been the better team. Have some tidy players, Hadj Moussa scoring a belter just now.

Really good team in the counter, if our midfielders or Messi lose one too many balls we could be in trouble.

Their game plan is obvious, they will try to neutralize us on the first half while giving up possession to bunker, then sub in Maza and today's scorer to put pressure on us during the 2nd half, hoping we suffer from tired legs and/or frustration (which has happened before in games we didn't manage to put away beyond 1-0 scores).

Their coach is rather defensive, I'm confident he won't start the youngsters and instead choose experience against a powerhouse opponent.

That's a good thing. Maybe just maybe Scaloni will finally wake up and smell the mate.

If only friendlies means something, Mexico tied Portugal recently. I dont think anybody thinks USA is a darkhorse because they beat Uruguay 5-1. Friendies results has always been random.

    If this is true...

Otamendi and Cuti in the back?

Palacios and RDP in the midfield?

The 2024 Copa showed us that Scaloni wants Cuti - Licha in the back, the only way Otamendi would start is because one of them isn't fit.
I know it was a friendly against Honduras, but both Palacios and RDP had a good game the other day, I prefer Paredes over Palacios though

Or to save Lisandro and Romero for the knockout rounds. Start the rotation in the group stage. Honestly, Otamendi should be fine in this round. He is a leader, warrior, inspiration for this team and no one can question his heart.
